Selling a camera on Facebook market place and the guy wants me to ship to daughter who is studying in Texas. Will pay $100 extra plus shipping fees. These guys sure do keep trying.

Thanks Wayne for being smarter than they are.

I listed a camera on craiglist for local only. A guy wanted me to ship to California (I was in Illinois). He paid and extra $150 plus shipping. I didn't feel right about it but he was begging so I did it and it went thru fine.

I frequently make eBay purchases intended for my kids and ask that items be sent directly to them in order to save time and double shipping costs. So far, so good. I have never offered to pay extra for sellers to do that. Notwithstanding my own experience, I know there are shysters out there who continually develop new ways to allow us to be separated from our money. So far I have resisted the temptation to purchase a Nikon D850 overstock camera for the $99 advertised price. Besides, I already have one so I should allow more deserving buyers to avail themselves of these kinds of offers.

I had a feeling it was a scam so I played along a bit until I mentioned the word scam, he then no longer replied.

Although I am aware that scams do exist, on CraigsList in particular ... perhaps I am a little naive here ... but it seems to me if you request to be paid with PayPal it shouldn't matter where or to whom you ship to ... reason being PayPal will tell you when and if the money is in your account and therefore it's ok to ship ...also you can employ a tracking number and a "sign for" delivery conformation ... if I am missing something here, please let me know ...

He wanted me to use venmo what ever that is. Using PP you need to ship to a PP confirmed account for full protection. If he payed with PP the Texas address would be a risk for me

Venmo is owned by PayPal. You create an account and transfer money into it, like with your debit card. When you pay someone or a business, you transfer it to their account from your account. There is a fee if the money is going to an individual. I view it as a solution in need of a problem. You don't earn any interest on money you put in your account. If you decide to withdraw it, it can only be sent to your bank account, and they need the details. I don't think using it is any more risky than using PayPal, but you can see how they are making money off of people who use it. I was recently annoyed when a business would not accept any other form of payment. Really?

I checked up on Venmo and from what I understand you do the transaction using a smart phone. Mine is an older flip phone with no wifi on it.

You can do it on a smart phone or on a computer. Maybe some see this as a preferred option for them, but I don't. My debit card works fine, so long as some idiot business won't accept anything except Venmo.

Venmo is intended for paying for services or paying your portion of a split bill from dinner among friends / known payees. If you pay your rent to your landlord, you know who you're paying and what you're paying for. That is 100% different than buying a good, to be shipped, from an unknown seller, from the internet. All the dispute resolutions of PayPal are missing from Venmo. Skipping PayPal for a sale of a good is a risk to both the seller and buyer.

Even PP can be a risk if you are not careful. Twice someone tried to scam me with sending me an ok to ship paid invoice from PP. Both times I checked my account and no money. The invoices fool some people cuz they look legit.

Maybe he was an honest guy who didn't like being accused.
