If I'm enthusiastic about photography as a hobby, am I deemed an "enthusiast" or a "hobbyiest"? How do manufacturers design, market or otherwise aim equipment towards one group or the other? Are there really two groups?

How you refer to yourself is up to you.
The only defined distinction is between a professional and a non-professional (whether you earn a living or get paid for photography).

References to "prosumer", "advanced user", "enthusiast" etc. are ambigious at best. It's your call.
You can be what you want to be (without joining the army either).

It does not matter what you call yourself, unless your intention is to deceive someone. Me? I'm a "camera nut"!

What I mean is, how do the Mfg and equipment reviewers differentiate between the two groups, they seem to draw a line somewhere.

If you sell your photos you're a professional, If you take pictures for a hobby You're not. Who cares about the semantics and pop culture labels.

I understand it doesn't matter compared to bigger national and world concerns, but often I see articles and reviews that mention "enthusiast" and "hobbyist " in the same sentence as if there's a difference to a lot of writers. That's all. Just curious. I'll just keep shooting.

I'd say there is no distinction between those two terms, and they would be used interchangeably. There are many groups, but hobbiest and enthusiast are just one of them.

look at it this way. a hobbyist goes out on the weekend with his camera. the enthusiast takes his camera everywhere. but who cares? i'm an enthusiast who sometimes forgets to take his camera.
