We are in Yellowstone. After a day in Lamar Valley, I attempted to import the photos from the SD Card (64GB 95 MB) into Lightroom. Some of the initial files were uploaded correctly, but most of the shots would not preview and appear to be corrupted. What a bummer! I ran SD RescuePro and after several hours it only recovered the good files. Any suggestions? Am I screwed? What can cause this type of failure? Nikon D7500. I have included a screenshot from Windows Explorer.

Are you looking at a Windows preview problem of perfectly good images? If the files have attributes and a sizes in your screen capture, the absence is a preview is not a problem. The D7500 is a relatively new camera, what version of LR Classic are you using? What version of Windows are you using?

You've highlighted SMS_3934.NEF, do you mean this is one image that didn't import into LR? With the card placed back into the camera, does this specific NEF display? Because if the camera can read it, the problem is your software, not the card.

Start by using the Windows OS / File Explorer to get the images off the card and onto your harddrive, not LR to copy the files. Next, go into LR and use the Help / About menu and double-check your software title and version number. The LR Classic software should report v10.3 in June 2021. Sort out any issues here, if needed.

To show / confirm your Windows software, open a CMD window (or use the Run window) and use command = WinVer

To show / confirm the NEF files are valid, download Nikon's free Capture NX-D from the Nikon site and use that to navigate and open the images you've copied to your harddrive.

Somewhere in these steps you should uncover what is going on as well as confirm the image files are valid.

Can you see the images on your camera when the card is inserted?

Windows 10. Lightroom Classic 10.3. Both latest versions. Files do not display when the card is inserted in D7500. Files do not display in On1, NX Studio, or Affinity Photo as well. Files look like the Exif data is missing.

OK, but not good. What message does the camera give when try to display?

What brand card and specific model?

Cannot Display Image. Kimsnot Extreme Pro 95 MB/s. Looks like a SanDisk knock-off. That could be the problem. Think I'm screwed!

Yep. They probably don't have a return policy or guarantee? Consider if this is the lesson needed to confirm:

1. Consider if 64GB is worth the risk of all your images on one card. It's one thing to need 64GB for 45MP RAW files coming out of a D850. It's another when you're packing 2000+ NEF files from a 21MP D7500. Are two 32GB better than one 64GB?

2. Consider how often the entire community comes together and agrees SanDisk Extreme Pro are the recommended card type.

I buy only Sandisk (mostly Ultras).
Currently I have:
1ea. 4Gb (playing around/testing - the card that came with the camera years ago.)
5ea. 8Gb (bought before 32/64s became cheap)
6ea. 16Gb (on sale at different times)

I have no problem changing cards before they are full (mid location if necessary), and my camera tells me how many more shots I can put on the current card. If I go to another place after shooting, if I have less than 100 shots remaining on a card (an arbitrary value), I'll put in a fresh card before going there or upon arrival.

👍👍 Yep, those are the correct takeaways from this unfortunate experience.

When living in China visiting friends would buy cheap Chinese knockoffs of SanDisk cards. None ever worked properly.

After reading the replies, I concur, your up a creek with no paddle. Here is a link to info on the D7500 card info. I use SanDisk.

Next time you're in the market for a camera, consider a model with dual slots. You will always have a backup.
Those cameras may be more expensive, but what are your images worth?

I would also recommend NOT using cheap, knock-off cards. SanDisk are excellent as are a few others. Personally, I use Lexar cards along with a few from Sony. If you purchase when on sale, you can get wonderful cards for less money. Check out B&H and perhaps sign up for their daily sale blurb. Best of luck.
