This photo perplexes me. I think it has potential to be a good photo (of one of my grandsons), but I'm having difficulty editing it. Any suggestions that might coax a good photo out of this?

Frankly, I kind of like it the way you posted it. You're probably going to have to identify which grandson in the title, but I like it a lot. It shows the persistence of a true fisherman.

Other than correcting the level of the shoreline, I think that the shot is excellent. Any lightening, etc. would, in my opinion, take away the mood conveyed by the shot. Just my impression.

Perfectly illustrates a point in time. I can recall my Son as a boy, fishing dawn to dusk at his Grandparents lake house.

The shoreline is curved. I leveled the photo with my grandson in a perpendicular position. Leveling on the shoreline leaves my grandson at an angle.

I appreciate everyone’s comments. Apparently the photo is properly edited.

there is a good bit of ghosting around the boy, and his fishing pole. I would probably try to run it through the de-noise filter and see if I could not get rid of that

Agree with PoppieJ.

You should level the lake water. Water always seeks the level. If your grandson was leaning over a bit then he was leaning. I'd also suggest you run it through a denoise software. Because of the lack of light it's quite grainy. It might be interesting to do a monochrome treatment. In that case some grain might actually add to the image; a throwback to the days of grainy black and white film.

Is this an edited or unedited version?

It may be worthwhile posting the unedited full size jpeg then so we can see the potential for possible improvement.

I would appreciate you or anyone else giving it a try. Thanks.

I’ll post an unedited JPG this afternoon.

Thanks for all comments and suggestions.

This is my take on your image. This is what I would do to my own image not saying there are other ways to do this. Each one of us has a different vision.

1- For sure the horizon line needs straightening.
2- Lots of noise that needs a noise reducing software. I use Topaz Denoise 6, the old version.
3- I duplicate the background layer. In the layers palette I select SCREEN. That will brighten the image. Play with the opacity slider to bring the image to taste. It is very possible the child will need some burning-in.
4- The halos are the result of the front light. Could be removed but it will take time and skills. Exposure is important for subjects like this. I meter from a middle tonality in the sky and usually make two images, one like the meter suggest and the other 1 stop of light darker at the expense of the shutter speed (next higher shutter speed.)

This is my result and I understand it does not have be to the liking of others.

I love it as it is...
But it could be straightened..
I would remove those couple dots of light...
And, if possible, the noise...
It's lovely though
