Film vs Digital.... again
OK, now that there are plenty of high quality 35mm film cameras available at low prices, advice please?
Quote from Ken Rockwell review 10 years ago: "If you want digital, it's easy! I buy print film at Costco for $1 a roll (Fuji 400 with a coupon) and have it developed with 5x7" prints and the images burns as JPGs on a CD for about $9 a roll. You can shoot this way for years, not pay as much as you would for a digital camera, and have the files on gold archival CD, prints, negatives, and presuming you copy the files to your computer, your computer, too! "
Googling film processing indicates that Costco's new film processors print at only 6 MP resolution, anyone know what the resolution is for the JPEG's on CD?
Just because I like posts with pictures.
I checked a few images on my HD:
2976 x 3968 pixels, 3.32mb, will print at 10 x 13 inches.
2356 x 1182 pixels, 438kb, will print at 8 x 4 inches.
I've calculated print resolutions at 300 ppi.
If the 5 x 7 inch images on the CD are around 1500 x 2100 pixels, you should have no problem getting them printed at good resolution.
If the disks have not been looked at for a long time, I would also suggest you put them into the disk drive, and see if they are still readable. If so, copy them to either an external hard drive or to DVD's - the CD's won't last much longer, not so much because of the CD's themselves, but because the technology is changing.
I can read CD's only in my 10-year old laptop. Win7 on the new laptop or the less-than-two-year-old desktop gives me an errormessage that their are incompatible....

Digital has come a LONGGGG way in the 10 years since Rockwell voiced that opinion. 2.47MP D1's were still extremely popular amongst Pros at that time.

Esther: I also have some old CD's of pics, except my laptop is even ruder...it says I don't have a CD installed.
MT: Yup. About that time, I got my first digital with about 1 MP for only $500.
FilmFanatic: Don't be afraid to express an opinion. Are you saying that's bad? :-D :-D
On well, maybe more research before I take a step back. Meantime, for those who don't really care about high resolution, here's a 1 pixel foto. :|

I do tend to beat around the bush, don't I... :)
for now digital,i got courious and got the bug.if i was still doing film,i would be only doing slides. i would have my screen and projector out and my computer off.it would be a little harder to share my photos with you and everything would be manual focus. oh yeah,i'd be about $14,000.00 richer.
ive got a canon 600d BUT i also use minolta 7000i film camera i love the minolta regards stingray
That's what I'm talking about, stingray. You wouldn't sell your Minolta on ebay for $40, same reason I still have a Nikon F.
Bull, that's another option I'm considering. I like slides and I have a 14 megapixel slide scanner.....

I just wonder how much longer film and the chemicals will be around to expose and process prints and slides.
