You know you are getting old when your grandkids are taking drivers ed, our one and only, a granddaughter, is at that point this summer. They are paired up with an instructor for the road part of the classes. After the road class is finished, each student is asked to critique the other they have been paired with. One student commented the following: "felt like I was a crash test dummy!"
I know exactly what you mean. My 16 yo grand daughter just got her learners permit.
Yeah, four down and one to go.
Going thru this also and it’s reminding me of when our kids were at that age. Good memories but where did the time go😳

Yup, that starts this summer with my one and only 16 yo grandson. his first car will be a 1999 Camry, which I drive now. My brother has a unofficial rule in his family about first cars, they have to be older than the driver.
For you "young" whipper snappers, you know you are getting old when 2 of your great grand kids are approaching that point in time!
Where has the time gone?
How fortunate were some of us (now seniors) to have lived through the 3-on-the-floor, non synchromesh transmissions, very limited heaters/defrosters, hand signals for turning, no power accessories, no electronics vehicles & now into the present world. We haven't yet seen it all ,but we've seen a lot.

When I was 16 my sister with whom I lived signed me up for driving lessons. I took two and then the instructor took me to the DMV to get my learner's permit. I did the test and at the conclusion the instructor asked me if I got the permit. No I told him, I got my driver's license instead! He was pissed -- no more paid lessons!
I remember three on the tree, but not 3 on the floor. Maybe I’m too young at 77.

I have 2 that got there's.
When my children were little , they would set on my lap and steer the car on dirt roads. When they were too big, then they drove, first at 5 - 10 mph. When they mastered that , then we would increase the speed. That way , when it was time to get their permit, all they had to do was pay attention to the road and other drivers, not thinking about the control of the car. We tried with our grandkids, but they were not around as much, when we take our country drives down dirt roads.
I still 4 on the floor in my dads old 72 c-20 pickup (granny low)
And they should never be allowed to drive alone unless they know how to jump start a car, how to change a tire, and what the red warning light means on the instrument cluster. Because of ignorance of the latter, my grandson had an engine seize up.
A-man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember going to the town that was our county seat. I got the guy I had always heard about he was a stickler. We went out to my parents car he sat down in the passenger seat and pulled out a ruler an said “when you parallel park if you are farther from the curb than this ruler you fail”. I passed.
