Hello, can anyone direct me to a safe site to establish a shutter count for a Canon 5D III? Thanks!
For an EOS 5DIII and a Windows machine, I use the free download from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/canon-eos-digital-info/It downloads as a ZIP. Create a folder where you want to keep the software and extract the ZIP contents into that folder. Turn on your EOS and connect via USB to your computer, then launch the EXE from the download.
There's likely free Mac options too, but that doesn't apply to my situation.
Anyone that suggests you can upload an EOS JPEG to some site on the internet doesn't understand EOS cameras, and those time-wasting suggestions can be ignored. Canon does not store the camera shutter count in the image EXIF.
Thanks very much. Appreciate your time.
That worked great. Another question if you don't mind? Do you recomend always updating the firmware through Canon? Thanks!

Yes, as in download the latest version for that model from the support section of Canon and install yourself. I believe you have to put it on your CF card to get it installed, although I don't need to update my firmware often enough to remember all the specifics. The how-to instructions along with the firmware cover the details.

Make sure you have a well charged battery so there’s no possibility of the cameras shutting down during the upgrade process.
I thought I would give it a try on a 7d mk ii. The line at the bottom "camera is detected" showed the 7d correctly, but no information was revealed and the top line simply reads "Camera Not Connected". Tried reconnecting and restarting a couple of times with no success.
Just an FYI to other 7d owners.

Do you mean the shutter count or the FW upgrade? If the FW upgrade, If I recall correctly, you download the new FW to the CF card (I use a card reader), then insert the card and choose FW upgrade from the menu.
If you mean the shutter count of an EOS 7DII with a DIGIC-6 processor, the technical details are that Canon changes how / where the shutter count is maintained almost with every DIGIC processor release. The link above to the freeware was based on EOS DIGIC processors through the DIGIC-5, such as EOS models 5DIII, 70D, 1DX, and T5i. For newer models, one much closely examine the inventory of Canon EOS cameras the perspective shutter count software has documented as being supported. This is especially important if considering to pay $ for a tool to perform this task.
Thank you for the clarification on the shutter count issue. I'll do some more research.
Canon sure makes it hard when you are simply trying to provide some basic info when you are
selling a body!

Sounds like they may be trying to tell us that it really isn't that important in the overall scheme of things...

I sold my 5D3 with >250,000 actuations, and it looked and worked like new - one tough camera.
