I've been a Nikoner for 12 years from D80 thru D850 and have way too many lenses just to walk away. Has anyone out there made the switch to Sony and successfully used the Nikon lenses on the Sony FF? That new Sony A1 is just too tempting to pass up.
Thanks in advance for any useful suggestions, other than to sell the whole lot and start over, possible but hate to.

Haven't seen results, but gave my Daughter in Law my Nikon 28-300 to use on her new FX Sony. Researched adapters and reviews of same, no particular problem, other than that the Sony sensor is different, so the wide end of the lens may not be great. When i get feedback, I'll share. I'm sure the Sony guys will fill you in. (Edited: Canon on the brain today! )

I use various Nikon lenses on various Sonys via various adapters with various degree of compatibility. Get the picture ?

Much as I find adapters very useful, if you get an a1 or a9(x) you’ll want specifically FE type lenses. Otherwise just get an a7iii with adapters and be happy like me !

Whatever you do, do NOT consider a possible Z8 or Z9 (plus FTZ) as that would just be waaaaaay too simple :-)

Exactly. As we all know, once you buy into a brand, get all the associated gear/lenses, its really painful to switch to another company. The financially smart thing would just stay where I am and not fuss about the mirrorless world and the rapidly evolving technology around the corner. You can't buy a winning photography. But........Just wondering what other's experience has been.

If you believe mirrorless is important, you don't flirt with Sony. You go all the way. Has anyone gone from Nikon to Sony and ever come back? The difference is not the camera. The difference is the camera and the lenses.

I was frustrated with Canon as I couldn't get additional reach (ie 1.4 or 2.0 TC) using my Canon 7D MK II with 100-400mm MK II (resulting pic quality was unusable). Sold all Canon gear. Switched to Sony A7RIV and 400 mm 2.8 and used a 1.4 tc with great results. Recently moved up to Sony A 1 and go birding almost daily with a 2.0 tc permanently attached for reach. Never happier. PS. Bird eye focus is amazing (almost perfect).

Sold all the Nikon gear and went Sony. Much simpler and less stuff to carry.

To me it has to do more with just not finding Sony as enjoyable to shoot with. I don’t like their ergonomics or their menus. Personally I’d wait a few months and see what the Z9 brings to the table.

Sony cameras are mature products and have the best documentation.

I went to the Sony A7R2 after my D800 was stolen, and am now on an A7R4. I would never go back to dslr. There are multiple advantages to mirrorless, which far outweigh its disadvantages.

My Nikon AF lenses (14-24 and 70-200 f2.8) did not have an easy transition. I have given up trying to use them with AF and IS, as no decent adapter exists. They are all flaky and fragile and AF is mediocre. This is a shame, because Canon lenses adapt quite easily and quite well, but not Nikon. I now have bought native Sony 24-105 and 100-400, and they are excellent, but expensive.

You will not be able to use an A1 to anywhere near its full capacity without native lenses. I'm pretty sure that Nikon will soon come up with something like the A1, and if they don't it's probably time anyway to change horses. If you don't have the money to replace your whole kit, I suggest putting off the decision for one year. If Nikon doesn't by then have something, you can buy the Sony A1 mk2...

When we get to the a1 Mark III you won’t even hafta get up early with the birds. It will just slog out there all on its own while you watch the real time remote feed over croissants and coffee.

I currently live in two worlds, Sony and Nikon. I have shot Nikon since my first Ftn in 1969, I shot professionally for over 35 years using Nikon and Hasselblad's.
I still own my D500 and D850 along with about 10 Nikon lenses. I even still have my Nikon D3s and two Nikon D micro lenses.
My Sony includes just three pieces, the Sony a9, 200-600, and 600 f4. I use my Sony's to shoot primarily wildlife because of the 20 fps I get from the a9.
My Nikons are used for everything else.
Nikon will be bringing out a 200-600 sometime this year. The Z9 will also be out this year. And, I believe their will be two new Z camera's also.
The a1 is nice but expensive, switching your whole system would be expensive. That is why I only took a small step while waiting to see how Nikon will shake out this year.
If I want to go back to Nikon, I only have 3 Sony pieces to sell.
I believe Sony will be coming out with the Sony a9III, it will have several features that are on the a1 except a mechanical shutter, I have only used the electronic shutter on my a9 so if they come out with the a9III, which should be $2,000.00 less than the a1, I believe that would be the better value over buying the a1.
Sony is also famous for bringing out lots of models making older camera's less desirable.
Something to consider.
I would strongly recommend going slow or waiting a year to see what shakes out this summer and fall.
I would also recommend, once you make up your mind, to buy on sale of buy used Mint condition.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

Interesting quote. For now I have my feet firmly planted in both Sony and Nikon. I use my Sony a9 (mainly for it's 20 fps) and 200-600 and 600 f4 for wildlife and use my Nikon's for wildlife and landscapes.
I believe there are advantages in both systems and I use both for those advantages each provide.
Nikon did come on to the mirrorless scene late, but I believe they will do just fine.
Later this year the Z9 will be out along with a 200-600 zoom and some fast long telephoto lenses.
All the camera companies are driving new mirrorless models that will benefit us all.
I look forward to what is coming next from the big three. It will be an interesting next couple of years.

That is 100% correct.

It's the native glass that makes the jump to light speed.
