A very nice day trip about 50 miles away. What do you suppose caused this rock to be split like this?
It
is an odd fracture pattern!
Water gets in the cracks and expands when it freezes.
Does it freeze in the winter there?
Was a LONG time ago, they're really weathered.

Nice images Alberio . My guess on the rock to slit was moisture and temperature change to cause the slit.
An excellent set. The weather, heat and cold caused the cracks. Mahalo for sharing.

Yes it does, more that you'd think.
The fractured rock was about 8-10 ft diameter and you could see all the way through it. There is a smaller but similar crack forming just to the right of the big one.
Good move on your part. Most tourists miss Kolob Canyon. Very nice shots.
Nice set. Well worth the drive.
The split is caused by water and ice and gravity, pushing and pulling the rock apart along weak points.
A very enjoyable series, Alberio...the close-ups of the boulders made for interesting subjects!!

Nice shots of those rock formations!
The cracking is caused by old age. When get as old as those rocks something is bound to break — where do you think pebbles come from? 🤔
