Something to consider when backing up files is backing up errors. I almost ran into that yesterday. A file I was working on looked like it was missing a section. I had just made my three backups, so getting the good copy from a backup was out of the question. Fortunately, the files wasn't as messed up as I had thought. That's happened to me before, though. I made a backup of a bad file.

Searching here for threads regarding this backup package, the most recent found were from a year ago or so. I was wondering if anyone here is using Acronis' latest version on an M1 Mac (apparently the latest is built to work on that) and if so, how you like it.

TIA

I had the home version years ago but never used it. It was quite easy to set up, as I recall. A friend, an attorney, uses the professional version on her office computer and it saved her from tremendous loss. I find it amazing how little some professionals know about computer security and back-up. Too focused on their profession, I guess. She got lucky!

I used to use the latest version on a Win10 desktop. The antivirus portion is a little intrusive, so when I bought a new XPS desktop I canceled my account. Now I copy my data drive with robocopy. I never made an OS image, reinstalling Windows is too easy.

Yes, Acronis has become bloatware. It used to be a good program to do a clone (or an image). The last version I upgraded to was so intrusive it caused my computer to stutter on movies and scrolling web pages were frustrating. I removed it and swapped over to the duplicator method and never looked back.

One disadvantage of duplication is that the destination drive needs to be at least the same size as the source drive. I usually get the *exact* model SSD and never had a problem. I'm using a SABRENT duplicator

Good luck and keep on cloning, Alan

The antivirus continues to be active and running even when it is turned off in the Acronis protection screen. I have disabled all of the parts that I can, yet there are some that I can not get to. If I could go back to previous versions for just the back-up/recovery functions I would in a heart beat.

Is the paid version also loaded with junk? I hate to pay for a program and then be pestered.

Acronis is morphing into cyberprotection. in their effort to do so, they have problems with taking over the computer in which it resides

I wonder if the problem with governments and businesses being hacked is that they are using the free version of protection, rather than paying the $29.95.

As far as I can tell Acronis' free products are not "free." It's trial ware that are full featured. After the trial period the software changes into the proverbial pumpkin and you have to buy it.

My issue with Acronis that is that it has become bloatware. The last good copy of Drive Image was 2018 and you cannot get a downloaded copy of it anymore. It's a marketing ploy that I do not understand. I had Acronis on all my machines - no longer. I use duplication instead. Only drawback with duplication is you need to be able to remove the drive from your computer in order to do duplication.

For the desktop there is a drawer option that can be installed for easy removal of the OS drive for easy duplication . On laptops it's a little more work.

There are other software options such as Macrium & AOMEI Backupper and others. These two programs never finished the cloning operation with my machine because they wanted to assign a drive letter (I assume "C") and my computer wouldn't, so the cloning was stopped at a point where the target drive was useless.

Oh, there is a free software called Clonezilla that allows you to leave your source drive in place but the drawback is that it is sector by sector format and you need to have a drive at least as big as the source drive and the program will not expand to accomodate the newer larger drive - if that be the case. Clonezilla requires a learning curve but I found it surmountable.

Yes, I discovered that recently. There are good free backup programs, though, but I suspect they will all become subscription eventually. I think Macrium Reflect still has a free version. I'd buy a program as a last resort, but I won't buy a subscription.

Consider this: If you value your content, at least do a simple backup of the documents / images onto an external drive. No one can place a value on family / professional images.

you can always go out and buy a new computer but if your current computer has crashed and your docs / images are on the original "C" drive of the non-functional computer, you have lost priceless content. At least copy your docs and images onto a USB drive.

As I said in a previous post, I never got Macrium to work 'cause it hung up on "cannot assign a drive letter issue. I suspect it tried to assign a "C" drive letter which Windows will not allow. If anyone has a suggestion, i'm open

Right. I backup important folders, but I seldom backup the entire drive.
