an old Nikon thread is probably not the place to add an unrelated question about Canon EOS technology ...

.....Strangely, the 100-500 Imatest numbers are slightly better than the 100-400 II numbers - even tho the 100-500 doe NOT have Fluorite and has 1 fewer elements ! - and, is a 5:1 ratio zoom

Too small of the sensor, too few MPs ...so the crop of the image will be limited and the richness of the image diminished...but thanks for your suggestion... I do know some prefer the D500, I own a 800e already and IF I am upgrading likely to move to D850 or Z7II

Very nice picture.

Am considering the purchase of a Nikon 500mm f5.6 PC

Does anyone have experience with this lens using the Nikon TC lengths 1.4x 1.7x and 2.0x?
I noticed the 1.4x is the most expensive

I am asking about how well this lens will work with the various TCs...thanks for any input or output

Nikon D850, setting camera to crop mode, with Nikon 500PF and using appropriate software. I do have a TC, tried it on the lens, but did not like the result.

But the lens itself is incredible. So easy to handhold and shoot, even the hummers. You do still need a steady hand, however.

Not a problem EXCEPT for 500mm is too short... the PROS who should their fine pics are in EXOTIC places where they can and DO get close to critters... like on their expensive workshops tours... which is fine, IF you can get close. So 700mm is the minimum for me... thanks

With a crop camera, either a full frame set in crop or a crop, the 500PF is 750mm.

Thank you for your reply.

So IF going with Nikon 500mm f5.6 + TC 1.4... wouldn't that make it f7.1?

and you recommend a better or higher mp body... I failed to mention I do own an 800e which I used with the Nikon 500mm f4 Is and it worked fine UNTIL the old Nikon lens broke...the D850 may have better sensors and a few more MBs.

One friend of mine switched to the Canon R5 + 100 - 500 lens + TC1.4, and even added the 1000mm lens you have noted [ money not being any concern] .. he's 80 yrs old and is delighted with the change. He could not hoist the Canon 600mm f4 II he used with tripod anymore. This upgrade would be fairly costly to me at this time. I was surprised HE liked the zoom over his prime, but am not certain IF this has more to do with lightening his load v the quality of an image.
Thank you for your reply. br br So IF going wit... (show quote)

In your other post, I replied with an actual comparison shot between my 500 L prime and the 100-500 zoom taken with an R5. Granted, it was not the most current model of the 500 L. But the sharpness of the 100-500mm zoom was better than my 500 prime. I was so pleased I sold my prime. I think you will be similarly surprised at the sharpness of the zoom. And yes it works very well with the 1.4 T/C; although these days, my first choice would be the new 800mm if I needed the reach.

It may not use flourite elements, but six elements are 'UD' (ultra low dispersion) while one is 'Super UD'. It is an amazing lens that has rendered many fine shots for me.

Sigma has a 300-800 f5.6. The drawback? 13 pounds. Image quality is pretty good.

Yikes!

Thanks for the chart link! I previously owned a Nikon 500mm f4 IS and coupled it with TC1.4 II and it definitely slowed down the tracking on BIF, but AF still worked.

Currently am using Canon 5Dmark III w/Canon 500mm F4 L + TC 1.4 and am VERY PLEASED with its speed and sharpness...the issue has become THE WEIGHT and being able to hold it UP for more than 45 seconds. I do own a Gimbal set up but when I travel around and pop out of the car... monopods and tripods slow me down.

Should I just get a decent head for a monopod and suck it UP?

I am NOW not sure what to do, since 500mm alone will NOT cut it for me... I need/want the distance... do mostly birds of prey in wilderness areas... they are very wary, so will not let you get too close.

Have gotten used to a PRIME and be shown WITHOUT doubt in my mind, NO zoom will compete with a PRIME...

Let me know how YOU might sort out this conundrum... thanks!

Not sure how old this question is, but I am in the SAME condition... canon 5Dmk3 w/500mm f4L and no longer can hold it for BIF or carry-around situations... the monopod has not worked well for me... so what to do... let me know IF you made a decision or bought something...thanks, richard
