On the first point, we disagree, the camera still does a remarkably good job, and more important, I am having a great deal of fun with it. Who knows, I may get a D5!

On the second, there are things I can "fix" and things I consign to professionals. I have already got recommendations for a couple of Pro camera shops. I'll contact them and find out what is on offer.

Everything you need to know about DIY sensor cleaning:

http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/

It's the same process and the same tools a "pro" shop will use to do the job.

Likely it's going to need cleaning again occasionally. Might as well learn to do it yourself!

I love heavy camera so no problem there. I do at times want a small camera but if it's not small enough to fit in my pocket then it's the same as a big camera. So the D3 size and weight is no problem for me. However, I am concerned that it can not be repaired any more.

It can be repaired and made better than brand new down here mate...
and when I say better than brand new I mean exquisite.

If 700 tons can be made to fly, a D3 can be repaired.

Not if it needs a part from Nikon, no a D3 won't be repaired. Nikon clearly said: don't send it here, we don't have the parts. We know from other threads, Nikon doesn't sell parts to third parties.

And we know they outlast some of your brand. I own a bunch that are still perfectly functional down the decades.
Suspect my Nikons will work after it is a concern of mine. Or yours!

I was able to complete a significant repair of a D300 four summers ago. A donor body supplied the necessary parts, which were in as-new condition, for a cost of $50. Still have most of it. Did have to have some help at the end, because the repair required going further into the internals than I was prepared to go. A local camera repair shop helped me with that part. The biggest challenge was finding replacement grip pieces, because disassembly damaged every one of the original ones. Probably wasn't economically justifiable, but that wasn't the point at the time. I've restored lots of old and abandoned two-way radio equipment to good or excellent operating condition over the years, always for the challenge, never the money.

Midwest camera is a good place for Nikon repair. From your post it appears you were not aware of Midwest camera repair. They carry many of the older parts needed to repair older Nikon digital camera's, they are somewhat a boneyard for all older camera's. And the good news for you CHG_CANON, they can repair even your outdated Canon camera's, isn't that nice.
No, Midwest does not get their parts from Nikon for older models, they get these parts from their vast boneyard network of parts. I have personally had my D3s repaired there.
I am trying to be helpful here by giving POSITIVE information that will help others. I do not slam other brands like others do here. HINT HINT HINT.

Seems that if you want to make enemies, simply point out something true and widely known about Nikon's business practices.

No enmity, just a slice of your own back. Fair enough, I think.

Yes when Nikon said they don't have parts then it can be considered can not be repaired. But if you are willing to spend a lot of money and insist on having it repaired you can certainly do but that was not what I had in mind.

No man,

We have the parts down here, LOL mountains of em for the D3.

Apart from that, any camera part can also be fabricated... with better than the original materials
and built/machined more accurately than the original parts...

The Camera Clinic is authorised by Nikon (and Leica and Sony).
Take a D3 to them and they welcome you with attractive ladies, (at least they do when I rock up with my D700
and ZX12R) mountains of parts, and skill levels beyond world class... Not to mention parts fabricated/built on site.

Yes! a D3 can/will be repaired, you just need the skills and materials

Having said that, I guess I'm a bit spoiled, The Camera Clinic is only about
45 minutes from my place, and they have a combined experience of over
200 years of camera repairs... And to top it off, motorcycle friendly.

I can't believe that there's nowhere similar in the US.

Sounds like the Victoria tourism officer is encouraging you to visit Australia.

No... it's true.

And if you've read all my posts (unlikely because you would probably have gouged your eyes
out by now, but any way) you'l know I've commented on some serious problems with the state.
Apart from that, I have absolutely nothing to benefit if you did visit Victoria... Or used the Camera Clinic.

Having said that, if your up against a dead end vis a vis ANY camera repair it would
be worth the shipping costs to send your camera or lens all the way down here to the Camera Clinic.

https://camera-clinic.com/index.php/en/contact-us

And apart from that, it seems you failed to digest:
"I can't believe that there's nowhere similar in the US." There must be somewhere in the US like the Camera Clinic.

How about billnikons lead of Midwest Camera:

And the last thing we need down here are tourists spreading
god knows what strains of the covid 19 virus. I'll be happy
if you stay put in the good ol' USA, Dirt F.

I don't know, I've never been South of the equator although I did quite a bit of travel. Perhaps things are different down there.

I will admit that I did miss your posts about Victoria, and I wasn't (trying to) imply that you would benefit from a visit. Just tongue in cheek stuff.

I am not an expert in camera repair since none of my cameras have ever needed anything beyond a sensor cleaning (which I do myself now). But I do hear a lot about how Nikon USA has a hold on the repair market here.
