Today I have more House Finches than ever and a few of the males tend toward orange or orange/yellow instead of red. From what I have read in a few this is genetic but most it is diet during molting when they grow new feathers and some colors-red & yellow among them- the pigments have to come from their diet.
So this guy was somewhere else during his last molt eating a diet lacking in some supplements/minerals etc.
This individual seems to otherwise be just fine. In fact he was disputing feed etc. with several very red males and more than holding his own.
