Hello, have any of you ever shot the Polar Bears of Churchill? I am going in a few weeks and was wondering whether I should rent a Nikon 200-400mm or a 80 400mm lens to shoot the with. I am bringing two bodies and will have a 24-70 on one and was trying to decide what to put on the other since changing lenses is pretty difficult. Any thoughts? Thank you so much...K
What Nikon camera are you using? I would go with a 70x200 with a 2X multiplier if using a camera with 24mp. The tour guys get pretty close most of the time. Yes, there will be some big lenses. I have a 200x400 and use a 1.7 multiplier. (1.7 is the biggest you can go to have autofocus) Focus starts to get pretty soft above 350.

You will have bears right at the vehicle, although they may present challenges with regard to shooting angles. Add a medium wide to short tele to your list.
Hi Mr Mogul, can you be a little more specfic? I am a novice. Thanks k

You won't need as much "reach" as you would think. The bears are accustomed to the tundra vehicles, so you will be pretty close to them most of the time. In fact, many times, they will actually stand up with their paws on the vehicle, hoping for a "handout". A good walk around lens like a 18-250 mm, or there abouts should be sufficient. Have fun! It is an interesting place.

Polar bears have no natural enemies on land and they aren't afraid of much except for loud noises (explosions), and that only makes them run 30 yards or so. So they won't running way from the Nodwells and they won't be long range targets. If I was you I'd put a 70-200 f2.8 on the other camera and have a ball. (Assuming both cameras are FX bodies).
