As I have for the past 15 yrs +/-, I plug my camera into the computer, EOS Utility (v3 currently) fires up, I tell it to download images, select just the new ones, and in a minute or so the download is complete.
Except today.
I have a few protected images saved on the card which it sees but does not see any of the NEW images shot today.
I would be surprised if its a card problem since the images shot today seem fine on the display.
I have a DIGITAL, 6 Slots HI SPEED 51-in-1 card reader which I used a couple of times 10-11 years ago. Seems like I plugged it in and the Canon Utility program recognized it and download what I wanted. But my memory could be bad. Anyway, the device isn't recognized when I plug it in.
I've rebooted the computer a couple of times - no luck.
Ideas anyone?
Try getting the images first with a USB connection with the card in the camera and the USB cable between the camera and computer.
Regarding the card reader, see if a driver is out of date and the reader is not recognized. You'll have to google the brand / model and see if you can find problems referenced by others and whether a driver download is the solution.

The USB connection, Camera>Computer, is how I download all my images.
And you are probably right about the card reader driver being out of date.
One thing that should probably be done is once you access the images, remove everything off of the card to your computer (including the saved ones). Update any drivers & then format the card
I cannot comment on the camera to computer connection. I typically do not do that unless I do not have a card reader handy. If that method works then you have isolated the problem to the card reader. But I do see that the card reader is very old. New ones are very very cheap. Perhaps purchase one of them and see if it will read your card?
It also could be the USB cable on the card reader. I have had to replace card reader cables before to get the card reader to work. And is you are using a computer port hub, you may have to uninstall some of the cables attached to the hub.
Can you see the pictures on the camera display?

I down load the camera directly to the computer' No problem'. I always reformat the card after the download
Thanks all! I regained access to the card.
I have an Asus 27” 4K monitor that has a bunch of USB connections. I had 1 cable attached for my 7d2 / 1dx2 and another for my 5d3 (different connectors).
For some reason? the computer lost track of / or only partially recognized those ports. I plugged the cables into a connection on the computer & was back in operation.
Happened a few years back but I can’t remember how I got the computer to recognize the monitor ports. No doubt it will happen again auto-magically.

Did you buy a newer SD card standard that your old reader does not support? SD comes in several generations. If your card reader is stuck in the past, get a new one.
Regardless, your hard wired connection not working is puzzling!

I have 2 cards - a CF & an SD. Once I have downloaded AND backed up my keepers, I delete the images on the card except a few protected ones that I might want to use for a double exposure.
The problem you experienced is a common one as many of the newer computers and laptops do not have enough input ports or not enough power to them (individually or collectively) or both. The solution is to only attach those needed at any given time for a specific application. Or the problem could be caused by something else that is very techy. Google USB port problems and solutions. You will get something like this:

Sounds like your USB hub cannot supply enough power to the peripheral devices you’re using.
