This was a great time on the Lake. A group of us set out in our canoes and spent about 4 hours with these two adult loons and their baby. the sharing of the care was amazing

Gorgeous photos. The third is outstanding; composition, interest, lighting & exposure all flawless. Well done. 8-)

If you don't mind me asking, what were the settings for these photos? 8-)

I don't mind I took these very early in the morning so the light was different on the lake so I had to use a higher iso•Camera: Canon EOS 50D
•Aperture: f/7.1
•Exposure: 1/1000 sec.
•Focal Length: 500 mm
•ISO Speed: 640

I would normaly like to shoot even with static shots( not moving much) have my settings at 1600 7.1 and 400 iso. I also normaly use my canon 60d and that camera is faster then my 50d

Thanks for responding. Nice lens you have, and exposing at 1/1000 sec. is the way to go with a focal length of 500mm, insuring your photos were sharp as a tack.

Sweeet. I like #4 allot. Maybe some more background, how you approach loons? I've lucked out with a nesting loon, but find it difficult, even in Minnesota (loon state) to find these birds with their chicks.

I took these the first week of July. When they have baby's they tend to protect and not dive as much. This pair was really comfortable with us and we spent 4 hrs with them we also saw great blues eagle which is why they went into protection mode a few egrets. A canoe or kayak is the best way you can float quietly towards them.

Too mournful for me. The song is definitely unique.
