This week a yellow milkweed that had grown from seed decided to bless me with blossoms. This plant is in my front flower bed just outside the front door. Initially, I processed the raw file in Affinity just using the usual tweaks to contrast and then sharpening using Topaz Sharpen ai and Affinity's High Pass Filter.

Since it was rainy, hot and steamy outside, I decided to play for a bit. My next version is a simple B&W using Topaz Studio 2 for the conversion. For number 3 I decided to get a bit more off the wall. In this instance the same photo was run through Topaz Studio 2 using the Yellow Intensity Filter. Finally, for number 4, another B&W but this time converted using NIK Silver Efex Pro 3.

This is just a way to get a lot of practice and fun out of one shot.

Looks like you had some fun and good results. It sure beats looking out the window at the rain and pouting about it.

Rainy days are the perfect time to try new techniques. I enjoyed seeing your efforts. I like working within photoshop boundaries. Many times I get the feeling when I use Topaz it becomes over processed. If I use Topaz I will got to it while inside photoshop and make a composite or duplicate layer then go and try some Topaz. Once I have something I say ok and it goes on the top layer where I can change the opacity to make a blend of Topaz and the original.

I played around with your first image and got something you might find interesting, if interested I will post it.
A big congratulation Carol on trying new processes and techniques.

I did this without too many tricks. The background is yours just blurted a bunch and darkened. I used a filter, find edges, to give it an additional edginess to the flowers. 😊

As you can see, I'm getting a bit of help in the torture chamber!

Beautiful set and exercise, Carol. I’m a big fan of Silver Efex Pro, so of course I like that image best.

Thank you! I normally let it run in auto and that usually works out. If I'm not satisfied I will run the comparison mode and also tweak the settings. Usually, the auto is fine. I do up the noise setting a bit frequently so I don't have to run DeNoise but let Sharpen do it all. I also add the Affinity High Pass filter as a final touch even if I have used Sharpen ai.

Thanks!!

Thank you, Joe. I too am coming to the conclusion that Silver Efex Pro is the way to go most of the time.

I'm not a fan of plug-ins - I've tried many but find I can do the same and better just with Affinity Photo. I like your original best, Carol. For me the flowers in the b&w conversion are too gray but that's your artistic prerogative.
