How do I find "shutter actuation" count on a Nikon D80 and on a Nikon D90? I can find no reference in my D90 manual.

download a free copy of 'exiftool' on the web. You don't have to use all the features of the program; just shoot one picture and load it into the program and under all the exif data you will see the shutter count. good luck!

I am under the impression that the camera will tell me, if I find the correct menu.

i've been thru every menu down to its depths at least twice and i don't find it. seems like this third party program is the answer. only problem is that it's a command line program like from days of dos. i use a mac. i'm sure there's a work-around but i doubt i have the brains to figure it out. i'll get a count from aperture as to how many images i have on there and then double it. that should give me a "close enough" to work with. thanks for your help.

not any nikon I've had (d70, d80, d300) and on several blogs I've visited the question is always asked and they recommend one of the free editing programs. If your camera does, nice. And if I'm wrong about Nikon, even nicer!

I use Opanda for my D200. Get it free here.

I downloaded Opanda but can't seem to find the shutter actuations for my Nikon D60. Maybe I am not looking in the right place. Any suggestions?

With Opanda it will be way down at the bottom of that long list of items most of us don't pay any attention to. :0)

I also used Opanda prior to purchasing a D-700. It works well.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your help. Sometimes I miss the obvious.   Duh! I must have scrolled the full list three times before I sent the message and never saw it until you clued me in. Guess my old age is showing.

On a Macintosh I get the shutter count of a Nikon raw (NEF) photo using the Preview applications. Go to Tools > Show Inspector > More Info > Nikon > Shutter Count.

TRY THIS: OPEN IMAGE IN CS5. CLICK ON FILE, THEN ON FILE INFO. COUNT DOWN ABOUT 22 LINES AND YOU SHOULD FIND THE IMAGE NUMBER. THIS WORKS FOR MY D90.

In buying a used camera, how many shutter actuations would you consider excessive?

I use PIE, and for us old people, lol, the shutter count is the first line in the info on the right side.

As for how many on a used camera? I would find out what the maker says the lifetime expectancy of the shutter is as a starting point. Then balance 1/2 of that with the count you get on a used one and make a decision on the price you paid.

On a 100K I wouldn't pay too much for a used camera with 50K, though it's been my experience of reading and owning several, the shutter lifetime isn't really a main concern.
