Welcome, quirkel
I have the Rebel XSi and when I want to change the metering mode I just press the 'up' arrow on the cross keys. Metering Mode will appear then just use the 'up' or 'down' key to select 'spot metering' then press 'set'. Good luck-hope this helps.

rebelshooter,

Thanks for that, I knew there had to be a spot metering function on the Rebel somewhere.

Eric

Glad I could help

Thanks to all for the great comments! So many great suggestions that I will need to try!!

And wow, Silver, this is Exactly the kind of shot I'm trying to achieve. I will take your advice and try it.

Beautiful shot, btw!

Thanks again!

As is stated you either expose for the moon to get greater detail or you try to expose for the foreground. Can't have both really, until the digital age, unless you're really good in the old fashion darkroom. It's basically going to involve combining two different photos. I have seen good photos like you want that can be shot early morning while the moon is still visible even though the sun is up and painting the landscape. All a matter of timing and the perfect time timing is very short.

That's a pretty cool site. Thanks randym77. Dpreview.com has a story today on photography apps for android and iOS. I'm getting ready to download LightTrac for my ipod

Thanks. When the moon is full it comes up just around dusk and its easy to shoot the moon at this time because there is still light in the foreground area. Shooting images with the full moon are easy right after moonrise. You can calculate where the moon will rise and just set up your camera and wait. This is what I did with this shot. I was at mono lake and I found a high vantage point. I just waited for the moon to rise and I had plenty of time to shoot.
