Another hot sleepy Delta day....
I love this song, maybe because it was always playing in the background of the summer of my last year in college.
Thank You for posting this. I've sung this song every third of June since 1967. Also, in 1998 I was singing it as I crossed the "rebuilt" Tallahatchie Bridge. I know it doesn't mean anything to most but I am proud of myself for my tribute to Bobby Gentry.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane and
compelling me to listen to this genius musician again.

I think this is one of those groundbreaking songs that altered music for all time. It was among the first that had a cross-over presence that was hard to categorize. Was it pop, country, folk -- it crossed so many lines and was popular with people who enjoyed different kinds of music. There were others like Harper Valley PTA and some of Roger Miller's songs like King of the Road, but I don't think any of them have had the staying power of this song. I think another song that had similar impact was American Pie.
If you are interested in the history of country music, check out the "Cocaine & Rhinestones" podcast by Tyler Mayhan Coe—great and—he did a whole episode on Bobby Gentry and this song!
