I rarely, almost never, take photos of birds. Great landscapes, interesting geometry, portraits, etc. have more meaning to me than our feathered friends. However, in Roosevelt Park, Edison, NJ, shooting whatever, I caught this mallard doing his duck thing. I hope you like it.

I like it, perhaps consider expanding your photo subjects for this reason... there are MORE surprises than you can imagine with living creatures... I am a wildlife [ not real wild but not domestic] photo person and have found birds of all sorts to be beautiful and joyful to behold... good luck

You may be right. BIF are sometimes fascinating, stationary birds, not so much. The photos of birds of prey hunting and fishing can be candid reminders of the laws of nature; "Survival of the fittest". What is more amazing is the skill, patience and intelligence of the photographers who capture these images. And, it isn't a matter of how good or expensive the hardware is that they are using. That serendipitous photo that I submitted was caught with a Nikon Coolpix P7000, an inexpensive but relatively complex bridge camera with virtually the same capabilities as my D5500 or D80. I can shoot manual, aperture or shutter preferred, program, or auto. The ISO, WB, EV can be adjusted as well, JPG and/or RAW. The IQ is excellent. Picked up on eBay for $60.00.

So, back to your original comment: I may need to reconsider my subjects, and add more wildlife to the mix. Thanks for the suggestion.

Example of the vertical take-off position of water fowl! Those wet feathers create quite a bit of drag that has to be overcome before the bird can transition into the water walking phase of takeoff.
