Are the older versions of Photoshop free to download and if they are where can you go

A better approach would be to grab Affinity Photo. It's been on sale for $24, half of it's normal price of $50. It does way more than the old photoshop versions, and competes well with the current PS rental. Up grades are provided free. Hard to pass up even when not on sale.

They are not free but it's not very difficult to get a copy (It's not exactly legal) for nothing. But the old version also needs to run old OS. You will have problem with raw files from new cameras.

I had to break out a 6-7-year-old computer running Windows 8. When I tried to load Photoshop CC on it, Photoshop did not work.
I contacted Adobe by "chat" and they took control of my computer and loaded a version of Photoshop that would run with that operating system.

Nope, old software does not become free when it is no longer supported.

As for any software, the "DOWNLOAD" (the process) may be free, but usage rights are not.
Sites like to get people with the "Free Download" phrase....

How old is your computer? What OS are you using? What camera are you using? Why would you want to download (illegal of course) free software to use? Would you use a stolen computer? Would you pirate wifi from a neighbor if it wasn't locked down? Would you be happy if someone printed and used your images as their own?

Yes, they are free, but it seems to be impossible to actually get them. PS 2 has been discussed as a free program for years. See if you can get it and use it. You might get lucky.

I had CS2. It works OK for me but... I can't open the raw file from my Nikon Df and it doesn't run in Windows newer than XP. (well it doesn't run in Windows 7, I don't know if it would run in Vista as I didn't try)

I have photoshop 3.0 on cd i do not have the floppy disk's any more i have Corel draw 7 the First Bryce 3d. Hot dog, Page mill, Adobe golive. Truespace 3.0 4.0 5.0 back when i was into 3d and many more.

FYI...

"Photoshop Version 3" dates from around 1994, was the first version avail. for Windows and is quite primitive. Let's put it this way, it was the last version sold on floppy disks (and the first to be offered on CDs).

"Version 4" happened to be the first version I used on Windows, back in 1996 or 1997.

I suspect you're referring to Photoshop CS3 (Version 10, 2007).

I tended to upgrade every other version and think at one time I used CS3. Back in the late 90s and 00s, there was a huge difference in the cost of upgrade version and full version of the software. I recall paying around $200 for an upgrade versus about $600 for a full version. But Adobe limited upgrades to two previous versions max. If I had bought every third or even fourth version, it would have cost considerably more. At the same time, with a few exceptions I didn't need to upgrade every single version because the changes usually weren't all that dramatic. I didn't make this a hard and fast rule to only buy every other version, though. Instead I evaluated each version and would upgrade if there were significant improvements that I wanted... but at least did so every other version. I also participated in Adobe's Beta program back then. (I only did that for a few years because there were joften big glitches in the Beta software that made it very slow or difficult to use).

One thing I recall was that there was significant improvement in Adobe's noise reduction, going from CS3 to CS5. When I was using earlier versions of Photoshop, with higher ISO images I did my initial RAW conversions in Canon's software, because it handled noise reduction much better than PS. But with CS5 I saw so much improvement that I no longer needed to use the Canon software, saving steps in my post-processing workflow.

Today I use PS CS6 (Version 13) with the final updates Adobe issued (and has since taken down from their site).

I also recall there were enough improvements from CS5 to CS6 that I updated right away instead of waiting to do my usual every other version update (which, as it turned out, would never have happened anyway... since there was not CS7).

Frankly, if I were looking for an old, unsupported and orphaned stand-alone version of PS today I see no reason to go any earlier than CS6.

Photoshop 7 was the Photoshop that paved the way to the Photoshop Creative Suite versions (CS).
Photoshop 7 was critical as it established the working standard for Adobe 1998 color space.
We now have RGB 1998 based on this standard.
I have CS 4, and I have Photoshop 7, it is rare for me to use CS, Photoshop 7 is my go to program for digital images.
