Driving past Amarillo, TX this afternoon on I-40, I noticed one wind turbine wasn't working. As I got closer I could see the fire damage and stopped for a quick shot out the car window. Guess they shouldn't have contracted with Tesla....
Apparently this would have been a pretty interesting fire on top of that stanchion when it went. Download shows much better detail.

Interesting. Have not seen any burnt windmills in the Banning Pass in CA. I guess Edison or whoever has their act together better.
I'd say that one is toast.

For sure, I’m guessing a total loss

Maybe it over revved in the high winds...😎
How do you know it's made by Tesla?
I'm absolutely sure they don't and yes, most likely Sieman's...guess the joke was lost...Cheers.
I think those particular ones are either Alstrom or Vesta. The Amarillo Economic Development Corp. and Xcel Energy were involved with the deals setting these up. I was a reporter in Amarillo at the time these went in some years ago.

And I thought it was just a rubber band under the hood.
Our tax dollar given away as incentives in their finest!
"The average cost of a wind turbine can be anywhere from $1,000,000 to upwards of $4,500,000 depending on the kilowatt-hours it can supply within the time frame of one year. This estimated price range includes the cost of purchase as well as delivery and installation, which will vary between the different types of wind turbines. A higher capacity of kilowatts will result in a higher price, whereas a smaller wind turbine will be on the lower end of the spectrum."
Commercial wind turbines have an estimated life of 20-years and typically pay for themselves after 15-years of operation. Erosion of the leading edge of the fiberglass blades, mechanical wear and tear and fires from overheated gearbox oil are common causes of malfunctions.

Good info. Thanks.
ROI after exhausting a huge 3/4 of life expectancy and then with the looming prospect of hazardous waste disposal ahead combined with the tragic cost to wildlife and the visual and sound pollution doesn't seem to make it worthwhile to me.

I'm surprised it is still relatively intact!? Most fires cause the blades to part company from the rest of the housing.

I saw one on fire once in Altamont Pass in California. Nothing to do but disconnect it from the system and let it burn out.
