I have a nikon d5300 and I am on a fixed income so I need some advice on a good but reasonable priced Portrait lens. I do appreciate any guidance.
THANKS so much.

The nikon 50mm 1.8 af-s should fit the bill nicely and can be found used for under $150. If you prefer a tighter perspective the 85 1.8 is around $350 used.

A 85 mm lens is usually the choice of portrait photographers. That focal length draws the face more nicely.

I agree, 85mm is the glass of choice. Not to hijack the thread but I have a full frame Canon with the 24-105mm lens. Aside from the faster glass one gets with the 85mm prime, can I get the same results by placing my zoom at 85mm and doing portraits? What do I lose? Thanks.

I would agree, but on a crop sensor camera, a 50mm lens will do almost the same job as an 85mm on a full frame camera for a lot less money. Even a 50mm f/1.4 should be quite a bit less than an 85mm lens. And depending on how much room you have to work, the required subject distance can get a little long with an 85mm lens on a DX camera.

You don’t tell us what lens(es) you have now. I agree with others about the 50/85 lens choices but am wondering what you might have now.

My favorite portrait lens is a 70-200 mm lens. I feel your fixed income pain. One of the best deals for a Nikon 70-200 is the 70-200 f4 lens.
You can get them used, here is an example.

You should also consider the Nikon 70-300, which is currently on sale for $200.00 off list price and is currently at $396.00. This is a very sharp lens, would be excellent as a Portrait lens and double as a wildlife lens.

If you happen to have the kit lens with that camera you own you are all set up. A lens like the 18-140 AF, VR set to an intermediate setting like around 50 mm can do a great job at portraits. If blowing the background is a technique you like then all you have to do is to place the subject farther away from the background and shoot with an aperture like f5.6.

Great thought for taking into account this is a crop sensor camera.
an 85 would be like looking through a 127mm lens and stand too far back for most portraits needing more than a tight crop of just the head.

The 85 is for full frame. For a cropped sensor, I think you need about 55mm.

I have a Nikon 60mms 2.8 D lens, great for portraits on a full frame or a crop sensor camera, you can not go wrong. Just my 2 cents, but your choice.

You might already have an outstanding portrait lens for your D5300. With my D5100 18-55 kit lens, I've done many outstanding portraits at 55mm 5.6. If you need to blur the background, just position your subject farther from the background.
