Need some help...I tried to change the letter assigned to an external hard drive from the the computer assigned “D” to “Z”. I followed the directions from Microsoft Windows 10 using disk management. Disk management recognized the change but Explorer didn’t. (See attached) Your expertise is appreciated

Did you reboot after doing this?

Yes…with no effect. It’s weird that disk management shows the X while file explorer shows a the big question mark.

Change it again to another unused drive letter (like G:), make sure you complete the operation (click OK) and reboot again.

Thanks. I did try another letter (R) with the same puzzling results.

Hmmm. Here’s the Microsoft Ap note on the subject: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/change-a-drive-letter

I noted that you need to be logged in as administrator. I’ve encountered other puzzling issues changing windows configurations (such as write protecting/unprotecting folders) that appeared to work, but didn’t, that worked successfully when I ran as administrator.

Thanks so much. The YouTube videos never mentioned this. I’m sure that’s the problem. Thanks again.

It worked. Thanks so much. The process to run as administrator is more involved than I imagined. YouTube search came up with a number of tutorials with the clearest from Pace Consultants.
