In 1896 Manchester Mill opened their latest “State of the Art” cotton mill in Lindale, GA. In it’s hay days this single operation produced 1/7th of all textile products in Georgia. The looms ran for 105 years until the plant closed in 2001 because it could no longer compete with offshore producers. Most of the buildings have been demolished to reclaim the brick and heart pine timber. Today what little remains has a new life as a movie set and/or wedding venue, an ironic ending for a place who’s roots are child labor, backbreaking work and lint laden air. As an aside in 1900 18% of all American workers were under 16 years old.

Lewis Hine photographed “little spinner girl” in 1910, this composite (cut out from his public domain work) honors the many girls who climbed Lindale’s stairs.

That must have been dirty and unhealthy work.

A beautifully photographed and well presented set. The history adds to the impact. The "Little Spinner Girl" is another one of those impactful shots that will haunt me for a long time.

Thanks UTMike...glad you like em. I’ve had a mishap with my external drive...got my files back but not my folders...don’t have the heart to dive in it yet.

Thank you Curmudgeon...glad you like em. Credit for the little spinner girl belongs to Lewis Hine...his work helped make a difference. I can’t walk through an old factory without being haunted by photographs like his either.
