When Photoshop falls into the wrong hands...

It's that time of year again! High school yearbooks are being distributed. And young men (and old?) are being protected from viewing any visible female chest areas by the use - and abuse - of Photoshop. Nowhere are we being saved as vigorously as here in Florida! These young women are rightfully upset and offended because, many claim, these are outfits that they have worn to school in the past - and I might add, that are no more revealing than clothing worn daily by teachers and school staff. I think some of them should be even more offended by the lack of sk**l and caring obvious in the blundered efforts at Photoshop used on their images.

These images are widely available in the media and online and the young women and their families have authorized their use by the media..

No. It’s all over the national news. The NY Times picked it up in this morning’s edition, but the Washington Post had it over the weekend. I was a journalist for 22 years and covered education for part of my career. The tone deafness and stupidity of people in educational administration never ceased to amaze me.

Schools are still the most archaic thinking institutions so many people must deal with on a daily basis.

No, this really happened. They where aware of certain rules regarding dress code and some of the edited people had OKs for their dress before hand. Most of what I’ve seen was not a problem for most of us. That being said, get a competent editor that makes it look good regardless of what your view of appropriate is.

You must be kidding, are those supposed to be revealing? The censors are prudes. I take it this is not an Islamic school (noting no head vails ). Does this community require sports bras on cows, horses, hogs, and dogs as well?

Yes, I just read an article about that. Wouldn't it be simpler for that school in FL to simply require all females to wear birkas? If the administrators are so intimidated be girls and women, maybe they should keep them out of the school entirely.

I hope there is a good outcome to this ridiculous situation.

And those who are bothered by those girls should see a psychiatrist. The problem is with them, not with the girls.

I worked as an audio-visual and photographic specialist in a public high school. The schools principal required me to do similar cover ups in the mid nineteen-nineties. The similar changes were done photographically, before Photoshop software.

Not only were the images altered but what a horrible job!!

Bad retouching is certainly something they should be upset about.

Re outfits and cleavage, it should be stated in the agreement what is allowed and the students should have been told and given a chance to adjust their outfits before the photos were taken.

But after the fact rather than altering the image a note from the school to the parents, would have been more appropriate.
Their actions have resulted in a much bigger problem because now, the whole country knows about it!

Could have avoided the entire issue, had they simply photographed everyone in their graduation gown, with or without caps.

There is the answer. Schools need to get out of the business of portrait photography and simply provide graduation pics with everyone in their gowns.
