Last October we had a holiday near Lake Windermere and went to the village of Hawkshead.

The ferry named Mallard was built in 1990 and is a cable ferry which we caught in Bowness on Windermere and crossed the lake to Ferry House at Far Sawrey, a distance of only 540 yds, it takes less than 10 minutes, it operates all year running every 20 minutes. It can carry up to 18 cars and over 100 passengers, a toll is charged. If for some reason it is not operating an alternative road journey of approximately 15 miles is either around the head or foot of the lake. There has been a ferry there for more than 500 years with the earliest craft being rowed across the lake. The first cable ferry, powered by steam commenced operation in 1870.

Hawkshead Parish Church, St.Michael’s of All Angels dates mainly from the 15th Century and it replaced an early 12th Century Chapel.

The poet William Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammer School between 1778 and 1787. The school was founded in 1585 by Edward Sandys, Archbishop of York and a native of the parish.

The English writer and illustrator Helen Beatrix Potter born 1866-1943. She was best known for her children’s books featuring animals such as the Tale of Peter Rabbit, she wrote thirty books. She lived at Castle Cottage near Sawrey just two miles from Hawkshead . There is a lovely shop selling books and memorabilia in Hawkshead.
