My D80 is showing an "err" message. I tried cleaning the lens and camera contacts, resetting everything, and looking on line for help. Seems nothing works. Still have "err".
Does anyone have another idea short of sending the camera to Nikon or the dump.

If you are using an AF-D lens in Shutter Priority it could mean that the aperture needs to be set to the smallest f/stop and locked in.
Have you looked in the manual?

Not according to the manual.

Remove the lens - if there’s no longer an error then some aspect of the lens was causing it. When I use an old lens on mine I’ll get an error if the aperture ring isn’t set correctly.

When was the last time it functioned properly?
What has changed since then?
Have you tried other lenses on the camera?
What lens do you get this err message with?

Here is a short Video on what is likely causing this error message and how to hopefully fix it.

Mine was the aperture control ring. Not worth fixing. The D80 can be purchased in excellent condition for a little over $100.

If cleaning does not work - Take a look at your shutter actuation with no lens attached (set to fire with no lens attached in menu), make sure it still functions.

If it is a "dirty contacts" issue you may be in luck (I hope for you that it is dirty contacts)....if it is the shutter control system....probably best to sell for parts and move on (my opinion) or put it on display like I did, as I have one with the serious fail. For what you'd spend on repair, you can buy another, newer model (like D90) or others from that time period, or just move on and move up.

I have a beautiful D80 that sits in a glass display case....shutter system control fail, sometimes you can get it to take one shot, mostly not (like one pic in 30-40 attempts) and I have to use the preview button press with shutter button to get that much...sadly, it still looks like a new camera..... If you want something similar to D80, the D90 is a great step up (I have both), or newer. Someone may have the parts for repair (doubtful unless they have a donor), but many of the D80's had shutter issues (known problem) and while donor cameras can be found and parts used thru scavenging old D80s, if you can find one that works as designed. It did not impact every D80, but did impact so many that Nikon moved on quickly, and also ran out of parts quickly.

If you replace it, make sure you look for Nikon models that will shoot screw drive AF (if you intend to shoot the older glass), as some Nikon models (like the D3xxx and D5xxx series) do not support the lenses requiring motor in camera. D80 was my first digital Nikon, almost left Nikon due to fail, but went on with two D90s (sold one, so only one now), D7100 and D7200 have (and still do) keep me happy.

Any chance you might have tried to mount a non-AI lens on the camera somewhere along the way? This almost always causes fatal damage to the internal parts of the Aperture Control ring. If that is the case, repair will involve complete disassembly of the camera and replacement with parts from a donor body. You will also need all new rubber grips after reassembly.

The parts that get broken include an index sensor on a ceramic substrate and a wiper/spring assembly. Both are quite fragile and can also be broken if the camera is dropped.

The reason I know all this is that I traded for a box of equipment several years that included a D300 with a broken AI module. I repaired it (with help at the final step) as a project, even though it wasn't economically feasible. Cost was $50 for a donor body, $50 more for a non-OEM set of replacement grips (all I could find), and $175 for the actual repair at my local camera shop (because they really didn't want to do it).

The camera, which I count as not really costing me anything to start with, is still working fine. By the way...it worked fine all along with newer lenses. The problem only arose when I tried to use an AF-D lens.

I had D80, D90, D7200 and D7500 and you do need to set aperture to f22 or get an err

To my knowledge all Nikon DSLR cameras require that the lens aperture be set at the highest F. stop. The D80 does have a history of the focusing motor stripping a gear.

This is a common problem with D80 Nikon's. I have one sitting dormant in a drawer because of this.
Considering the current value of that model, I would try to find a used APS-C Nikon a few generations
newer. Good luck.

Why would he call Canon for a problem with a Nikon camera?
