LR does not "see" photos on card reader

I have an M1 Mac Mini. When I plug a card reader into the USB port the folder icon for the reader pops up on the Desktop. When I open that folder from the Desktop, I can see and open the files in various preview softwares. However, when I try to import those inages into LR, I can see the folder icon for the reader on the left side Source screen, but when I select it LR says it can't find any photos. There is an arrow next to the folder icon, but when I click on it LR does not see the folders inside the card. I do have "Include Subfolders" checked.

Ideas on why LR cannot see the folder or images on the card? Thx.

What files are you expecting to import, RAW and / or JPEG?
What type of Camera, brand and model?
What version of LR, be specific about version number and confirm this is LR Classic from the Help / About menu.

No idea what happened. Several days ago this occurred on a 2012 MBP. I finally resorted to opening the card in the reader then drug the photo files to the LR icon in the dock. Everything then transferred correctly. I reformatted the card, took a few shots and they imported as usual. Wish I was more help.

I am able to see the photos when looking at the card, and I can then copy them into a subfolder in the Documents folder where they are able to import successfully. But ugh, what a pain to have to do all the time.

You have the current LR version, capable of processing the CR2 files 'dual pixel RAW' files created by the EOS 5DIV. However, Adobe cannot action the dual pixel RAW. That is, the slight focus shift you might perform via dual pixel RAW is supported only by Canon DPP v4. From DPP, you'd have to output a 16-bit TIFF to import into LR. Adobe 'sees' the dual pixel raw files as 'simple' RAW files, with no additional features.

Your problem probably resides at the OS level of the M1 Mac Mini. The LR software just asks the OS on the resident equipment to talk to the card reader.

None of us are there to 'see' the situation exactly, so try the following to try to isolate where the issue resides:

1) If the M1 Mac Mini can copy the CR2 image files onto the local storage outside LR, try that first. If this doesn't work, you need to find how to update the OS on the M1 Mac Mini.

2) If you can copy the CR2 image files onto the M1 Mac Mini, can LR import from the M1 Mac Mini local drive?

3) If you have the Dual Pixel RAW option enabled on the EOS 5DIV, try disabling this feature and take new RAW images. See page 175 of the EOS 5DIV User Manual. See if LR / M1 Mac Mini can handle the new CR2 files differently.

When you bring up the import panel there is a setting to look in sub-folders. Select that and I bet your problem will be solved.

I was researching the current RAW support by Adobe while you found this workaround. You're saying the Mac Mini can read the card and CR2 files and copy them onto the local disk? And, that LR can import these CR2 files, no problem, as long as the card read is not involved?

This is a relatively minor workaround. In fact, that's how I and many others approach LR. We copy our files onto the local computer disk external to LR, setting the target folder name and location using the computer OS, not LR. Only when the image files are positioned into their final, permanent storage location within the library of images files, then they're imported into LR via the 'Add' import.
