Looking at the news on the Internet, there was a story about the bridge on Interstate 40 crossing the Mississippi River having a structural crack - which has been there for a couple of years. They have shut the bridge down until the extent of the failure can be determined and repairs effected. Watching the video presented, I recognized the bridge as one we had crossed on the trip from New York back to Palm Springs, though I did not recall that it was at Memphis. I might have recognized the bridge itself, but what caught my eye was the pyramid shaped structure nearby – and I’ve always wondered what it is!

Thanks for the info - an interesting structure!

Originally built as a sports and special events arena but hasn't been used as a sports arena since the Memphis Grizzlies and University of Memphis basketball both left in 2004. Good to see that they have re-purposed it.
Looks like one of those alien-built ziggurats I've been hearing about...
Is that the Bass Pro Shop with a restaurant at the top?
It looks like a copy of the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas.
Has a duck sanctuary in the mud flats next to it... Alto. I only read the signs. A 73' long truck won't fit there... and yes, been over that bridge many times...

First, how did you manage to go from Palm Springs (if Florida) to NY via Memphis? That would have taken you about 700 miles out of your way as you would most likely take I95 between the two. If you mean California, that is one route but again, you would be traveling down and across when there are easier ways to go from NY to California. Like I 70 to I44 then pick up I40 well on the other side of Memphis. Or take I80. Were you just out sight-seeing, or lost? As for the Pyramid, it was originally a basketball arena for the Memphis Grizzles Pro Basketball team, and Memphis State University. Why it didn't remain such, I'm not sure. Now it is an amazing place to visit. Inside the Bass Pro Shop there, you will find several lakes. One lake contains several large alligators, another six foot long alligator gar fish, another with several boats afloat. One of several restaurants has a circular two-story aquarium in the center of the dining area teaming with fish. There is a hotel located on the upper floors -- they are designed to look like log cabins. An elevator will (for a price) take you to an observation deck where you can look out on Memphis and the River. It's a place you could spend three hours easily or if you fish or hunt, all day!
