I notice in most photos of Great Blue Herons there is plumage on the back of the bird's head. This one does not have that. Is that a sign that this one is immature or a female or what?

Good photo, Frank. Beware, though, photographing GBHEs can become addictive! lol
From what I've read, it takes several years for that head plume to develop. Both sexes look alike, with the male generally being larger.
