North European Plain 29 - Germany/Quedlinburg 5 - Market Church to New Town

In this set we stroll from the market square to the ("slightly" misnamed) New Town section (Neustadt), which started to be populated in 1180, about 200 years after the "Old Town" which had problems absorbing the large amount of newcomers. We cross the two branches of the Mühlgraben and its island on a street called "Between the Towns", past the Town Castle, now a swank hotel and the former St Annen Hospital to arrive at the hotel/restaurant "The Golden Sun", located in a 330 year old building opposite the Mathildebrunnen and its large square.
DETAIL DESCRIPTIONS:
GUILD HOUSE ROSE - Built in the Renaissance style as a half-timbered house in 1612 for the mayor and his third wife, the upper floor clearly protrudes over the lower floor. It functioned at one time as the carpenters' guild house, at other times as a restaurant "The Rose" (Zur Rose) from where it appears to have received its name.
CITY PALACE - This solid structure was built 1564-1566 in the style of the stately architecture of the time. This noble palace, now converted to a hotel, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and registered as a noble farm in the monument register.
ST-ANNEN-HOSPITAL - The existence of a poor house and infirmary at the site has been documented since 1433. The current plastered building dates back to 1799 and is designed in the late Baroque style. In its appearance it is reminiscent of a palace. To the south towards the Steinweg there is a representative portal topped with statues.
HOTEL GOLDEN SUN - Occupying a 330 year old building opposite the historic Mathilda Fountain (Mathildenbrunnen), named after the spouse of King Henry I. This historic fountain is set on a large square. A brass pavement inset indicates that the square formerly was the location of the city hall of the "New Town", built in the 13th century and torn down in 1890.

European trips are great and you did it justice. I'm getting too old to do it any more. We went with a plane ticket and a rental car and just wandered for the last few times.
