A last suggestion - shoot raw+jpg files in case you need to fine tune the light's color balance.

What STUPID place doesn't allow tripods?

A place that has limited space (being a cave and all) and other people walking around.
Frankly I'm amazed they are permitted.

What if twenty photographers within the confines of a cave tour all carried tripods? and all wanted to set them up?
So who is stupid, stupid?

If you had ever been a guide in the tight spaces of a cavern with a herd of tourists jockying for the view, you would understand. I conducted hundreds of tours and thousands of tourists in a cavern. If a photographer is serious about getting great photos in the cavern, he/she should seek permission of the management to do a shoot off tour hours.

It's a beautiful photo- op.
I don't blame for not wanting to change lenses. The rooms are not large, some are narrow.
Something like a 20 - 80 would be about perfect.
Loved it I was there.

I'll be going to Luray Caverns in a couple of weeks. I have Nikon D3400 and 18-55 mm, 70-300 mm and a 35mm lenses. I don't think it a good idea to change lenses underground, so I'd like opinions on which lens to mount. My first thought is the 35mm.
I've checked with the office and tripods are allowed, so I plan on using one.
I look forward to your suggestions.
Thanks,

18-55mm
Your 35 is like a 50mm lens.
Use a tripod if needed.

Museums, small tight caves and caverns, basically any busy and popular tourist attractions, you know places where your desire to setup a bunch of walk hazards does not trump other people's "stupid" desire to enjoy their visit without tripping over all of your stuff.

Several years ago, I was a volunteer at the local arboretum, which is centered around a mansion built in the late 1930s by a well-known petroleum geologist. Photographers exercising their presumptive right to do whatever they "needed" or wanted to do to get their shots got all interior photography in the mansion banned for everyone. It remains so today. No exceptions are made for anyone.
