Not on the mirror or the rear of viewfinder then it must be on the bottom of the pentaprism, did you try a rocket blower to try to remove the dust on the underside of the pentaprism?

If it’s not on the exposed surface of the screen then you’re stuck with it ... unless the screen is interchangeable (which I doubt). Finder dust in any other plane is generally so out of visual focus as to be invisible, or seen as soft shadows only during DoF previewing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On-mirror dust near the hinge line might appear as semi-in-focus at the bottom of the frame, cuz it’s close to being on the same plane as the viewing screen.
Closing the light shutter unlocks the eyepiece and allows it to be unscrewed and removed. Opening the shutter will then let you direct a blower into the viewfinder and remove whatever has gotten in there. There are still optics in the way, but things are not sealed. It helps to remove the lens from the camera. You can also use a "pumper" zoom to force air in and out to try to remove the contamination.
The viewfinder is part of a vent path that allows air to get in and out to equalize pressure when a lens is zoomed (or sometimes when a lens is focused. Dust can also sometimes get in.
The D500 is supposed to be weather sealed! Well, i guess only certain parts are weather sealed.
Weather resistant and hermetically sealed are two different things. Try to zoom a"pumper" lens if it's on a camera that can't breathe. Won't work.
"...Closing the light shutter unlocks the eyepiece and allows it to be unscrewed..." Thanks Larry... you beat me to this... I actually had to disassemble the light shutter on my D700 and clean a small piece of sand out of it... Thankfully I had found a D700 service manual online... Without that manual it would have been a bear to figure out precisely how to accomplish this... See page 26 of 268 for light shutter schematic.
http://ss-it.de/data/servicemanuals/D700.pdf
One good turn deserves another... Enjoy this manual Larry... it's an intriguing read and Nikon didn't changed much on their other cameras of that era (or even their newer models)... The diagrams and schematics virtually priceless!
Caveat & Disclaimer... Unless you have considerable mechanical aptitude and a set of jeweler's tools might be best to let Nikon Service resolve the more complex issues... However I was able to dissemble the eye piece shutter and reassemble the component in roughly two hours (I took closeup images of the critical phases of disassembled components as I went). If I have to do it again it's a 20 minute job...
Thanks again Larry...
tuomi1947 the link to the Nikon D700 Repair Manual is actually in my previous post...
http://ss-it.de/data/servicemanuals/D700.pdf
It's been several years ago and I only have the link to the actual manual.
That said .de is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the Federal Republic of Germany.
Thank an enterprising talented thoughtful chap from Germany for providing it...
Your Nikon D500's components are likely very similar... I noticed that my Nikon D810 is pretty much the same for the light shutter. The good news is that the manual is in English for the most part :)
Enjoy!
