Film days: Called into action as photographer for cousin's very last minute marriage. Didn't reset shutter speed for flash. Got some really, really nice shots of wedding party's feet (only)! Actually surprised film processor was able to develop -- now forever filed in my "learned from that" morgue!

How could I forget to focus??
I did, 7 times, with attempts of shooting a small family gathering at my home. Everyone wanted me to shoot the group with me (of course in the photo). I set up the tripod, set shutter release for 3 seconds to give me time to place myself in the photo. Each time I reviewed the photo it was terrible. Not once did I figure out that I had not focused by pushing the AEL button. (I set the camera for BBF about 2.5 years ago). DUH! DUH! DUH! So, we have no photo of the group gathering. Might not have another opportunity for years.

Anyone else have DUH! experiences similar to this one.

Life is still fun. I simply smile at myself for all my "DUH" moments.
Stay safe!

Yep. Yrs ago, on a trip to visit fam in Georgia, my b-i-l had a gathering of his family, where five gens were present. He asked me to shoot a few of this rare gathering, which I was happy to do. This took place yrs before digital. The group gathered, I sert up my Spot-matic, with shoe mounted flash and started firing away. The setting was in subdued lighting, so flash was essential. I returned home, mailed off my roll of film, and anxiously awaited return of prints. They came, and upon opening the envelope, I was stunned, every one was black as night. I had inadvertenly plugged the flash cable into the wrong port. Can you imagine "my anguish in having to give the sad news to my b-i-l. Never another opportunity for this shot, for the patriarch, well into his 90’s, passed away several months later. This haunts me to this day.

I just had a "Duh" moment. I scrolled through 7 pages of posts...wondering how in the heck did this thread wind up in the Attic.

Then I got to the end of the thread...wondering WTH?

Then I noticed it is in Main Photography.

In your photo, you look great.
As for me, I don’t feel a day over 59!

The kids today have it easy with auto focus.
Back in high school, I had a manual focus Zenit-E. It is still a great teaching camera especially if you couldn’t lift weights at the gym that day. I can particularly say I could squeeze off four or five rolls of film. When I picked it up from the pharmacy a week later, turns out I wasn’t as good as I though.

Perhaps photography out of focus may be a new trend. I just might entertain this idea over the weekend.

In my film days, I found myself within ten feet of Jacques Cousteau. Looking through my rangefinder, I took some of the best photos of him ever done. Well, at least the best photos ever done with a lens cap in place.

I wish to thank each of you who dared to share their photographic "DUH's"!! It was fun for me and I suspect many enjoyed the wonderful responses and sharing of our experiences. I learn more from my failures than I do from my successes.

I appreciate the time & effort you spent in responding!
THANKYOU!
Mark

Don't beat up on yourself. I've gone off on a shoot without a card in the camera, and many other gaffes.

Oh Mark, you have been deceived - I make mistakes every day. It’s just as I get older, I’ve just learned to forgive myself more readily 😎.

We might grudgingly forgive ourselves but we never forget, especially when the opportunity to retake that shut is gone forever.

Perhaps my earliest DUH photography moment came after I was gifted a daylight tank to develop some 620 B&W film from my Brownie Hawkeye (ca 1954). I squeezed into the tiny closet under the basement stairs, turned off the light, and very carefully threaded the film onto the reel; boyoboy, it was not easy at all. After I turned on the light, I discovered I had the threaded the protective paper onto the reel, and left the film on the floor. I am so glad to be shooting digital!
