I’ve loved the game of basketball all my life, and played full-court weekly until my major motorcycle accident (broken toes, broken leg, broken neck – and over a month in the hospital) at age 85. I had started to coach several years before that, and continued until moving to the Philippines five years ago, at age 88.
In the first picture, the girl with the “top-knot”, Erika Arriaran, went on to star at the University of Texas (she was from Los Angeles area Norco High School, and came to the desert to play us in a playoff game (Cathedral City, where my daughter played). Picture taken with my Sony DSC-F717, but scanned here from a print.
The second picture is from one of the St. Mary’s High School (Phoenix, Arizona) trophy cases: We were the Girls Division I Basketball State and National Champions for the 2011-2012 season (we were second in the nation the next year – combined record of 59-1, and beat teams featuring players who subsequently starred at UCONN!!! I was privileged to be the Head Freshman Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach. All eight varsity regulars received major D1 full-ride scholarships! Chantel Osohor set records at the University of Washington – several games with over 30 rebounds, and she was only about 6’ 1”.

Great photos and story; thanks for sharing! (Only a month in the hospital with those injuries, at 85?!? Awesome!)
Nicely done. The last picture is really good. You can almost feel the emotions.
