Still working on Startrails

This time around, I wanted to have a lighthouse in the shot. I positioned myself so that I was looking north. Unfortunately, because of how the trail in the brush went (I was not on an open beach), I could not get Polaris directly above the lighthouse. So I put the lighthouse to the left of Polaris and pointed the camera right at Polaris. That gave me circular trails. (Polaris is the dot in the middle of the rotation). The lighthouse was illuminated, so that washed out a lot of the starts except for the really bright ones. Add to that the fact that north from where I was standing are a lot of towns. Since there were some low clouds, the light was reflecting off of them. I think I'm getting closer; but I'm still not really there yet. Looks almost presentable in download.

Thanks,
My concern, compared to other similar photos, is the relative lack of trails. I think this is because of the light pollution. I think I could have also done more exposures. This is 204 at 25 seconds each. I did some light painting with another camera and tripod while I was waiting for the shots to finish. Maybe next time also bring a Kindle and increase the number of exposures. Glad you liked the shot. It is my best effort to date. Thanks.

I like it, Erich. The lighthouse and the city light reflections across the bottom of the photo make it more interesting than a shot with just the star circles in a dark sky. Your photo has character.

This may not be a classic star trail shot, but it is beautiful photography! There is so much more to this image than just star trails!

Less is more in this case I think Erich. The fewer trails make for a style that’s both different and attractive. I’d be very pleased with that result.

Thanks. I agree with you that there should always be something to look at besides just trails. I'll be working on a few other ideas I have this summer. It could involve light painting a barn or some other building with the trails in the background. We'll see. Thanks for the encouragement.

Thank you. I had not thought in those terms; but you might just be right. It is a bit different than the usual. Thanks.

Glad you liked it, Cassidy. I think the weather is going to be favorable tonight. I might try another.
