I recently took these and did a little minor post processing. What is your opinion/critique of these photos?

The black and white is absent any light values in the right third of the histogram. Pretty dark.

The first has a nice moodiness to it. I would still lighten the lights a bit.

I find the white corners distracting in the second. My eye keeps being drawn to the corners of the picture, away from the flower.

This is a beginning. Save these, practice for a year, and compare.

The flower will work. But get rid of the vignette. It distracts. Crop closer until the flower fills the frame.

The rock and forest picture may work. But it does appear under-exposed. What is your intention with this picture? The rocks appear like the main subject yet they do not stand out enough. The rock and and the forest naturally contrast. Try bringing out this given dynamic.

Study image composition and its companion framing. These two together aim to achieve a visual balance. Big subject but effective composition can dramatically improve your photographs.

Likewise, exposure plays a large part in achieving a worthy photograph. Books have been written on this subject. Study it, too.

Of course, an interesting subject will naturally appeal to the eye of a viewer. Try to photograph interesting subjects.

Some photographs record the mundane, such as a family portraits. Yet well done, even these could flatter the family member if, for example, the photographer smartly used the existing lighting.

BTW: Nobody ever said photography is easy or cheap.

As a craft, photography requires doing while learning from mistakes and successes.

Good luck.

If not subscribed already, use the 'all sections' link at the bottom of the page and investigate and subscribe to the various subsections. There's a few you might consider for image critique. The Photo Gallery, with just a comment requesting critique, is a useful approach.

A long time ago we had a gal on the forum mwac (mother with a camera) some guy called her that as an insult and she turned it around. But she got all bent out of shape because in her opinon no one knew how to correctly critque a photo. She gave a big long lesson. Now that I'm thinking about it I think Linda from Maine got in on it to. It was looking for it but I can't find it. I liked it because it was in everyday language and not a professor talking down to me. I thought I kept it. It's probably some where in my junk file.

But all of these answers would get her started again.

She was very knowledgeable and a fun gal. She gave lessons on various photographic subjects. I miss her

I feel that both have promise.

I agree that the vignette draws my eye away from the flower that is interesting, to me, since it is from an unusual perspective. A square crop might work better.

What captured your attention enough to make the first image? It appears underexposed, was it taken at night? Increasing contrast, bring up lights and down darks, should add detail. Usually I’m not fond of vignettes, but a dark one might work in this case.

Keep shooting and posting! Also, be sure to click “Store Original” before saving so we can get a better view of your posts.

Thanks to everyone. This is what I need. The originals were in color. The forest scene was in daylight, but I used the B&W filter. Good critiques can send me in a new direction and hopefully help me improve.

MWAC left UHH four months before I joined. If she created the critique topic you're referencing, you should be able to find it here: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/user-profile?usernum=3380

The second is fine, but the first one, although a nice composition, is much too dark

The subject matter in the b&w is interesting. If it’s rock, it was once soft & cracked like mud shrinkage???
I see a story in that alone.

The critiques posted so far show the usual range: unhelpful and insensitive comments, high-horse declarations, and thoughtful, constructive contributions. C'est la vie, I guess....
