On my way out to purchase a digital camera to photograph fine jewelry. I already have a dslr with a macro lens for the web, etc. however, I need to take the best photos possible with a sm digital camera (for quick shots, inventory, photos to customers) ex: Cannon Cybershot or the Panasonic Lumix. Any idea's or suggestions? I'd like to keep the price in the mid$200's. I need a good optical zoom. It would also be nice if it was a good all around camera as well, for quick shots on vacations. I would appreciate any thoughts.... 8-)

I like my Canon Cybershot. I'm a product photographer, so if you need any advice on shooting the jewelry, let me know... If it's just for inventory, anything will do... but if they're really good you may be able to up-sell the images for advertising and marketing!

Wait... if you already have a dslr with macro... what is the point of getting a lower-end camera???

I wondered about that, too, John. Maybe the weight of it.
Anyway, I have a Kodak Easyshare and I really like it and it takes good pictures. Not as good as my Canon, but pretty good.

Thanks for the reply. I use the dslr, so my husband wants a camera to use, our Sony bit the dust. We had the cybershot for quite a long time & since I have to make a new purchase I was looking for "users" opinions before I purchased another camera.
Thanks again.

Besides the previous, the dslr is also a little big.

Have you tried tried typing on an I PAD. Sorry about the typo! I did find the off camera flash- Morris Midi slave flash. Now I just need to test it.It does fire from Nikon point and shoot.

If you were to budget just a few hundred more, I'd strongly suggest the Sony NEX models with their DX (APS-C)size sensors. The NEX-3, or the new NEX-5N. They take pictures far surpassing anything you will get with a point & shoot, closer to the quality of your DSLR, but still able to fit in your pocket.

With the new line of their NEX-3N, and 5N bodies out now, you can pick up a nice NEX-3 at 14megs for under $400 with lens.

Fujifilm S1800 or better. I use an S1500 because of macro and super macro settings. Focus within a few centimeter. And they are well within your requested price range.

I would say Sony or Nikon would be a good camera in that price range. They both are in that price range in my area depending on which store you went to.
