I caught these two males fighting over prime feeding territory at the UCSC Arboretum a few years ago. They were quite loud.
Fun pictures! I've a few feeders on my back porch, and there's one male that often will just stand - as if he's on watch - on our handrail. They are very territorial.
Glad you like them. It was quite a show. These were the only two good ones.
Wow, two male Allen's Hummingbirds taking it to the mat. Certainly something I have never seen before. Great captures
I feed hummingbirds during their stay in the Colorado Rockies during the summer and am always amazed at how aggressive they are and how much they fight. I space the feeders as far apart as possible which helps keep the fighting down somewhat but does not eliminate it. Last summer I found an unconcious hummer lying on a feeder with a penetrating chest wound. I believe this was probably inflicted by another hummingbirds beak. It died.
They also fight over flowers so I don't think not feeding them is an answer. Despite all the fighting this is the only casualty or wound I've seen and we have a lot of birds in the area. It was sad though.
Cage fighting, avian style.
Excellent action sequence!

Incredible shots! I've seen them in aerial fights but never on the ground!
I was really lucky. Just sitting in the hummingbird area having lunch, with my camera ready. I heard this racket, looked up and saw them. Fired away and caught a couple of good shots.
