I've been trying to get a shot of this black dog dark enough to show his black coat but not so dark that he was a black blob. This was shot in full sun in RAW overexposed 1/3 then toned down in pp. Wacha think?

Wow, you don't need a torch for Halloween as long as that dog leads the way.
You nailed number 1, I owned a black dog a while back and can relate to your problem. The only good pictures I got of him were in full daylight too. Number 2 is a nice fun picture. To think of all the times I played with light sources to avoid getting that reflection and you used it to complete a story. Good going.
Looks good to me. You can see it's curly coat quite clearly and that's what you were striving for......
