Vincent Versace and Nikon Studio NX.

Most probably some of you here participated a couple of days ago of an educational talk on the new Nikon editing software sponsored by Nikonians. I never finished watching Versace explaining how to use the program. I got lost in the first 5 minutes.

I sent an email to Mr. Eric Bowles who was in charge of organizing the talk to express my disappointment. Mr. Versace went into vague technical details but when it came to clearly explain the different parameters that could be used with the editor he failed miserably. Studio NX is a great editor for Nikon cameras, designed precisely to reveal all the qualities present in a Nikon RAW data. Like I have said in the past, Studio NX is the only editor that will accurately reproduce all of the colors captured by a Nikon camera.

Watching videos on line I found a young man who has educational videos from time to time about how to use features in Photoshop. To my surprise he has an excellent one on Studio NX. His explanations are so simple to follow and to the point. Now, after watching his video I feel more capable using Studio NX. For those that could be interested in learning more about this new editor from Nikon just follow this link:

Studio NX is not perfect, as a matter of fact it is in its first stage of development but it has parameters that will enhance your Nikon experience.

I have studied with Vincent and while he is a brilliant artist I agree with your comments about him as to how he explains things. This tutorial on the other hand is brilliant. Thanks for speaking out on this.

Yes, I was so disappointed with the webinar, a total waste of my time. I am glad that you mentioned that to Mr. E.B.
Thanks

When digital was still very young I participated in a workshop on photography with several speakers, I believe this was around 2003. I had at the time a Nikon D100 and since digital was something new I attended the workshop with the purpose of improving my photography. I am glad I did because it was the first time since I bought the camera that my interest for shooting and editing RAW data was in crescendo. Till then I was shooting JPEG files only.

In that workshop it was Vincent Versace one of the participants. I cannot remember what he discussed but I do remember that his explanations were excellent. By the way, during the talk he took a CD card and threw it against a wall. He was demonstrating how "strong" digital media was. I wished him well because a blow to the internal pins of the card only meant buying a new card and they were very expensive at the time.

I quit watching his presentation when he did not discuss the features of Studio NX in detail, like the young man in the lynk I posted. He discussed preparing a file for printing using 360 dpi and that was something I could not understand. I am sure Mr. Versace knows that a picture of a mural will take only 120 dpi and it will look fine if viewed from a distance, like it usually happens. For a majority of my needs 200 dpi have always been more than enough for excellent prints.

I decided to post the link to the video on Studio NX not only because it is indeed educational and well presented but also because I am sure there are photographers here that want to know a little bit more about the editor. I am learning the software and something that calls my attention is that Studio NX when converted to a 16 bits TIFF use a different color space depending on the camera that was used. With my D610 I get ProPhoto but with my D7000 I get Nikon RGB. I already passed that information to Nikon and I am sure a future update will address that.

I hope the link will help others here to learn and apply the many useful features in the program to their RAW data. Any JPEG file from any manufacturer can be edited with Studio NX but it is the Nikon RAW data which enjoys full benefits.

To camerapapi and John:

I have downloaded NX Studio and plan to use it as my RAW processor with moves to Affinity as necessary. The information you all provided will be very helpful. Thanks much!

Thanks for the link(s)! I have found I like the NX Studio results, but then there is that learning curve...

Thank you Mr. Maher for adding to this post. I reviewed some of the videos of your link and I also found them useful to learn some of the features of Studio NX.
Bayou do not put this editor aside, especially if you print your files. There is a learning curve with it like there will be one with each software you use but NONE of them will give you the quality files Studio NX will. This is a software made by Nikon for their RAW data to just extract all the original information that was captured by the camera.
