Hello everyone, my name is Justin. I am new to "photography" in the truest sense of the word. I have always like to take snapshots of my family, flowers, or vacation destinations. I have recently purchased my first dslr 8 or so months ago. I am looking for any and all feedback, pointers, and direction that I can get. Looking forward to learning a lot from you all. Thanks
Here are some shots I took of my son this past weekend, fire away! LOL

Welcome to Ugly Hedgehog, from one newbie to another.

Someone else said you have a good-looking son and I whole-heartedly agree.

Now, for a bit of advice. I really like the b/w shot - both artistically and technically. The posing is a bit mundane, but that's okay in this instance. I usually don't care for the "little league team" shots, but this one will work. Actually, the same can be said of the other two, as well - both that the posing is a bit prosaic and that they'll work for now. Why don't you try getting some action shots? Particularly in a sport such as football? It'll take lots and lots of trying, to be sure, but it's worth the effort.

I think you need some fill flash on the two color shots; frankly, they're a bit too dark. You can add that in your computer if you have the software. I'd suggest Photo-Scape for this - it's free, for one thing, and has a "fill-flash" tool among many others. It's not Photoshop, but it's still a good program.

Keep shooting. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Welcome Justin,

Since you are a self processed newbie here's the scoop.

As suggested above, fill flash can be your friend. If you know your equipment then force the flash on most of the time even outside especially when shooting shots like these with people in the scene.

The fill flash on the camera will always help bring life to dark complected subjects. So go to the camera manual today and figure out how to force the flash on when you need it.

You have a reluctant subject there it seems so you have your work cut out for you for the next few years. He will thank you for your efforts when he turns 40 or so. And do get into some simple software you can use to make some adjustments and we can help you through the other tough patches. Good Luck

Thank you Dave, I actually did use a flash on the 2 darker shots. In post processing I used a feature that softens the photo, but also darkens it and adds contrast. My wife also thought they were a little too dark. I will post the other shots for comparison. Thank you for your advice.

Thank you Shaky, he was all for it before we left the house, and then his buddies showed up just as we were getting into the truck... needless to say, dad and his pictures weren't so cool anymore. I took these mostly in Aperature Priority with the flash on, but sometimes it did not seem to go off. I will definitely read up on it.
