I haven't used this lens over the winter and wanted to refresh my understanding for the lens setting and watched a YouTube video. No biggie but then decided to post the images for my friend at UHH.
Image 1&2 Keeps my shutter speed @ 1,000 sec f/6.3 ISO 1250 lens fully extended to 600mm
Image 3 shutter speed @ 1,000 sec f/6.3 ISO 250 lens extended to 500mm
Shot using a Nikon D850 handheld
No startling results just thought I would post my images for other to see what the lens is doing or not doing in your opinion.
Pictures are raw straight out of camera opened in Lightroom then saved as .jpg at 55% being the largest UHH will let me upload.

I use the same lens on the same camera. It makes a huge difference in how you set up your shots as to how they turn out. It's a picky camera and a picky lens at times. Great combo when I get it right!

Curious how close you were to the flag pole. It almost looks like DOF is shallow with focus point on the Texas flag (think that is correct). No I didn’t open image to find exact focus point, just observation. Images at 600 are really good especially being at max.

I think I was about 75-85 ft away when I shot the flag. The camera was set on continuous focus at the flag in general. I looked at it again just now the focus is on the stars part of the flag. This shot was at set at 500mm. Had to come off the 600m to try and get both flags in the frame.

I'm in a car club. Once a year members drive their cars on a 1.7 mile slalom race track. I bought the camera to take pictures of participating members from about a quarter to half mile away. Here are examples of what I shot that day, the first time I used the lens in 2019. Last year because of the virus we didn't have a track day. I played around with the shutter speed while panning. I wanted to show motion but try and keep the cars sharp and in focus. With a couple years experence I should do better next time out.
You might wonder if I put my car on the track, did once that was enough for me. Happy I kept it on the track.
