Starting our walk through Celle after visiting the castle grounds, our first stops are at the City Church (Stadtkirche) St Marien and the very unusually decorated Old City Hall, after which we start ambling through the historic center with around 500 half-timbered houses.
The CITY CHURCH was consecrated in 1308. The Danish Queen Caroline Mathilde is buried here under the church in her ceremonial coffin in the ducal tomb, created in 1576. Daily, the steeple trumpeter climbs the almost 75 m tall tower and plays a chorale in all four directions with his trumpet.
The OLD TOWN HALL, built in 1292, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. It consists of two parts, the older part rises above the Ratskeller. In the 16th century, the older part of the building was modernized and provided with the elaborate facade painting, which was only rediscovered and reconstructed in 1985.
