Been used to an occasional, sometimes regular visits with one or more Red-Bellied Woodpeckers swooping in & grabbing a nut or a mouthful of suet & taking off like Spiderman, or being cagey trying to linger longer while avoiding portraiture. Sometimes I do manage a decent shot. A striking checkerboard design on its substantial wings doesn't deter from the even more arresting scarlet Mohawk. However, I've evidently never encountered the Female until a couple of days ago. Totally caught me off guard, seeing what looked like a shaved-headed one.

Beautiful photos - Its cousin the Golden Fronted Flicker (looks much like your bird) is punching holes in my house. I put up things to scare him away and he just moves over three feet and starts making new holes. i feed him a ways from the house to keep him away but he likes to punch holes.
Excellent shots. I see RBWPs frequently and I have never notice one as distinctly different as this one. Guess the ladies don't hang out at the feeders.
