For me, unique unit. Probably not unique to the mining in that time period.

In some mountain mining areas water power was abundant running water wheels and belt driven machinery - they not only pumped fresh air into the mines but compressed air for the drills and with that they could refill the pressure tanks most any where in the mine. These were replaced with electric battery powered "motors" that would stay charged a whole shift - the mines used water wheels to run the electric generators - the most efficient wheel was the "Pelton" wheel developed in Nevada City, CA by a maintenance man working in the Idaho-Maryland mine near Grass Valley, CA - the Pelton wheel is used today in hydro generators all over the world both large and "home size" The North star mine in Grass Valley had the tallest "wheel" 108 ft - it was sold for the steel during WW2.
I spent most of my childhood 1940-50 in the Grass Valley/Nevada City area where my father worked in the Gold mines the including the Idaho-Maryland and the Empire Mine

I visited this museum a few years ago.
They have a lot of very unique steam motors.
There are a few "air powered" steam motors that they run inside.
They did not run this unit when I was there.

Yes...the Santa Fe had one or more that they used in the subterranean trackage under downtown Dallas in the first half of the 20th century. Theirs scaled a little larger, though,
