I just purchased a new Mac Book Pro13” 16gb ram 1 tb ss hard drive I have a new 27” monitor so I think I’m in good shape. I am influx about the additional ports. 1 is for charging I have a hub for the second but I need 1 usb for my external hard drives and 1 for my Wacom tablet and I have never used a card reader as my old Mac had a slot. What card reader is recommended and how can I extend my USB port capacity for additional external drives for simultaneous back ups
Thanks
Joe

You need something like this to start:
https://www.charjenpro.com/products/ultimatedockThen, if you need Thunderbolt, get this:
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-hubOr this:
https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-dockThe first one above is great because it is USB-C version 3.2 (i.e.; as fast as USB gets). ThunderBolt is four times faster than that.
I have the same MacBook and just got a hub. There are so many different ones and you can find exactly what you need. They're great!

Hey joe got MacBook Air M1 and this hub best part is it includes SSD slot to keep your stuff backed up on👍
I use an older MacBook Pro (2016) with an 5K LG monitor that has USB-C ports in it so it both keeps my MBP fully charged, and provides ports for an external SSD drive for Time Machine back ups, and for a card reader. So only need to plug in one cable to the MBP, and get a nice screen to work on. Usually have my calendar on the MBP screen and use the LG for everything else.
Yes! I have the Sabrent 4-port that lets you turn the ports on and off. One comment: I haven't yet found a reliable USB extension cord, and I've tried several. Although the connection is tight, it will lose contact after a while, and I have to unplug and re-plug. I wish they made hubs with long cords. I thought about taking one apart and wiring an extension cord into it directly, but that sounds like something that is beyond me.

Its possible that you will find that the tablet is laggy if its plugged in thru a hub. It may work best if it gets a direct link directly to the laptop. I've seen that issue for other devices, like mice.

don't buy a cheep one, they will not support multi devices. using an ext sd drive should be plugged into the Mac not threw a hub, it will slow the data transfer rates.
