Exquisite photos. I visited Idaho about this time two years ago and was very fortunate to have the opportunity to photograph dogwoods. They don't do well in the Florida heat.
There are 45 species of Dogwood in the world , 13 which are native to N. America and of these there are just two native to the Pacific Northwest, although many others have been introduced here.
The part which most refer to as the flower pette1s is actually not a flower at all but is called bracts, a modified leaf. The actual flow is at the center. which contains the sepal, petals and stamen.
As the flowers bloom, the showy bracts expand to attract pollinating insects. Each bract has a dark red-brown indentation at its tip. Depending on location, dogwood trees may bloom in March, April or May for about two weeks. When pollinated, the flowers produce red berries relished by wildlife.
Probably more information about a Dogwood then you ever wanted to know
This is the actual Dogwood flower, located at the center of the bracts
Nice lens and beautiful images too!
Really pretty blossoms and nice shots. There must be different species of dogwood because the dogwood blossoms I see here are white. I wonder if different species have the same bark.🙂

There are 45 species worldwide. This happens to be one of the most common here in my area. I have seen both the fully white and the fully pink varieties also. As for the bark I never have really paid attention to it. Thanks for your comments.
